Walk On By........ sent on June 19, 2016 (18:13) by AnnH. 27 comments, 869 views. [retina]

at 170mm, 1/250 f/6.3, ISO 100, hand held.

A somewhat derelict paddle steamer that was once used as a bar and restaurant - now looking in a very sad and sorry state! I read that it was an original Mississippi paddle steamer that was refurbished in Liverpool and sailed down to Benalmadena. Maybe Dionne Warwick's hit song, 'Walk on by' was once played there.....

A greeting

Your camera seems to be set on f6.3....(other apertures are available...) I like this shot, the tight composition, the colours and the figure, who does not conjure up the leaving (female?) lover in the song! (But I get your point)

Thank you so much for your visit and lovely comment, Marco!

Lol! You really did make me laugh out loud, Tim! Only you would notice that! 6.3 seems a good number to me..... :))

Thanks! There were few people walking by, so I was pleased when this guy came along. I was also pleased that I was high up on the sea wall and he was unaware of me, as he seemed a little disorientated - possibly feeling a little 'morning after the night before' -ish!

The "good number" to use is the one that is the best compromise between focal length, maximum aperture, depth of field required and the amount of light available... - I'll leave it at that! (for now)

All advice gratefully received - although I can't guarantee I'll remember it in the heat of the moment.....

F6.3 is a fine number to use, except when it's the longest end of an f6.3 18-300mm megazoom - that's about the only time it should be avoided, unless really necessary. Of course, I don't know which focal length was actually used here (yet) and it looks fine, but, just keeping you on your toes...

I don't know either as I'm on my ipad now, so don't have the info to hand. It won't have been 300mm though - more like 150mm.

I would stick to f8 for most of the zoom range with that lens, though - it's slow and complex and so benefits from stopping down a little - I find f9 the best at 300mm for my Tamron SP zoom and yours no doubt yours would too - I used f9 a lot on the slow 150-500mm, whatever the length used, easy in the good light I mostly enjoyed yesterday.
