Il picchio di Hispaniola (Melanerpes striatus) è un picchio di media taglia, endemico dell'isola Caraibica di Hispaniola (che attualmente ospita le nazioni di Haiti e della Repubblica Dominicana). La schiena di questi volatili è coperta da strisce gialle e nere. I maschi si riconoscono per la presenza di una striscia rosso scuro che va dalla fronte sino al collo mentre nelle femmine la striscia rossa è più contenuta e si estende solo dalla nuca al collo. La coda è nera con una base rosso brillante mentre il sovracoda è grigio-verde. A differenza della maggior parte dei picchi, i picchi di Hispaniola sono animali particolarmente sociali e traggono vantaggio dal vivere in colonie molto numerose di adulti che proteggono i nidi, solitamente scavati nei tronchi di palma. Il loro habitat, ristretto ad Haiti e alla Repubblica Dominicana, si estende dalle zone costiere sino a quelle desertiche e montane all'interno dell'isola. #wild
