L'opera fu progettata dall'architetto e pittore palermitano Tommaso Laureti nel 1563 e venne sormontata dalla imponente statua in bronzo del dio Nettuno dello scultore fiammingo manierista Jean de Boulogne di Douai in Fiandra, detto il Giambologna, desideroso di rifarsi dopo la sconfitta al concorso per la fontana del Nettuno di piazza della Signoria a Firenze, venne a Bologna (scelto come scultore) e lì con l'aiuto di un noto fonditore "Zanobio Portigiani" della fabbriceria di San Petronio, (dopo avervi litigato) fuse da solo il bronzo per la statua in una stanza al piano terra nell'attuale piazza Galvani, dove una lapide ancor oggi ricorda l'impresa. Dai Bolognesi la statua del Nettuno viene chiamata (al zigant) il Gigante. Focale a 14 mmm Non è vietato guardare la versione HD #fisheye #monumenti
