I really like the image quality of this image. It was taken with the Canon 300 F4L IS USM with a 1.4X extender. I think the image quality is great! How do you like the Canon 300 F4L IS USM lens on Macro? I have this lens, and would like to use it on Macro. Thanks! |

The Canon 300 F4 is a good lens and it's fine to be used too for macro, both with the extender or with the extension tubes or with both.
However with a real macro lens, you will get sharper results.
Moreover, to achieve higher close-up than those needed for photographing subjects as one on the photo, it is necessary to add many tubes. But in this case, it becomes harder to manage blur due to the weight of the 300 lens and to the whole length that becomes significant.
In addition, the tubes and the extender decrease the brightness of the photography making difficult to focus and lengthen the time of exposure.
To conclude, the 300 lens is great for butterflies of relatively large size but for smaller subjects, it's better to use a real macro lens.
