Era un giovane diciasettenne quando "nel campo di concentramento ti toglievano tutto: qui tu non sei niente e non hai niente, neanche il nome, solo una divisa e un numero che ti toglie anche l'anima". C'è una vita irraggiungibile dal male, a questo serve una matita, a scrivere e trovare il tuo nome, come scrive il nobel Canetti nei suoi appunti: "Le lettere del proprio nome hanno una terribile magia, come se il mondo fosse composto di esse". L'Apocalisse narra che a ciascuno di noi Dio darà "un sassolino bianco, sul quale è scritto un nome nuovo, che nessuno conosce se non chi lo riceve" (12,7). Nella notte, alla luce delle stelle il diciassettenne scrisse una poesia: "La mia ombra a Dachau".
