Le “Graste” siciliane. La singolare forma e decorazione delle “Graste” o "Teste di Moro" è legata ad una leggenda ambientata a Palermo intorno all’anno 1000. Essa viene tramandata in almeno due versioni. Prima versione intorno all’anno 1000, durante la dominazione dei Mori in Sicilia, viveva, confinata in casa dalla gelosia del padre, una bellissima fanciulla. L’unico diletto concessole era la cura quotidiana delle piante del suo balcone. Un giorno, un giovane e bellissimo soldato Moro, nel vederla intenta a curare il suo balcone, ne fu colpito a tal punto che dichiarò il suo amore repentino e appassionato. La giovane ricambiò con altrettanta passione e si convinse di aver trovato finalmente quel principe che attendeva da tempo per liberarsi dal giogo paterno. Purtroppo, la giovane venne a sapere che il suo amato avrebbe di lì a poco fatto ritorno in Oriente dove, ad attenderlo, c’erano moglie e figli. Nel cuore della notte, la fanciulla, tradita ed umiliata, presa da una rabbia incontrollabile, aspettò che l’uomo fosse sprofondato in un sonno pieno e appagato dopo l’amore, quindi lo colpì mortalmente decapitandolo: Poi, gli aprì il cranio e gli piantò dentro un germoglio di basilico, facendone una sorta di vaso. L’uomo, che tanto aveva amato non l’avrebbe, così, mai più abbandonata e lei avrebbe potuto guardarlo, possederlo ogni giorno della sua vita. Collocò quella testa sul suo balcone innaffiandola quotidianamente con le sue lacrime. Seconda versione Una versione parallela racconta che la fanciulla siciliana era fosse di nobili origini. Un amore clandestino con un giovane arabo fu la sua grande colpa e per questo atto, considerato disonorevole, fu punita con la decapitazione. Stesso destino toccò al ragazzo. La pubblica vergogna di quell’amore fu, si dice, proclamata pubblicamente dall’esposizione di entrambe quelle teste, trasformate a sfregio in vasi, su di una balconata.
