Uno dei "desiderata" di questo viaggio era quello di vedere e fotografare il Tarsio, il piccolo folletto della foresta. Il Tarsio è uno dei primati più affascinanti e insoliti del mondo.È molto piccolo: il corpo misura generalmente tra 8 e 16 cm. Pesa tra 80 e 160 grammi, a seconda della specie. Ha occhi enormi: ogni occhio è più grande del suo cervello. Non può muovere gli occhi nelle orbite, perciò compensa ruotando la testa fino a circa 180° per lato (quasi 360° complessivi).Possiede zampe posteriori estremamente allungate, da cui deriva il nome "tarsio" (dal tarso, una parte della zampa).A differenza della maggior parte dei primati, il tarsio è un cacciatore esclusivamente carnivoro. Si nutre di: insetti, ragni, scorpioni, lucertole, piccoli serpenti, talvolta piccoli uccelli. Caccia di notte, individuando le prede grazie alla vista eccezionale e all'udito molto sviluppato. Lungo il fiume Kinabatangan, durante una escursione notturna abbiamo avuto la fortuna di incontrarne uno che si è fatto osservare per non più di un minuto per poi, con un lungo balzo, sparire di nuovo nella foresta.
