La chiesa paleocristiana, dedicata al diacono e primo martire Santo Stefano, è situata sul Celio, uno dei più alti tra i sette leggendari colli di Roma. La costruzione, con le sue preziose decorazioni a mosaico e da marmi, era una tra le più sfarzose della Roma antica e costituiva insieme alla Basilica di Santa Sabina e alla Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore una delle massime espressioni della cosiddetta “rinascita paleocristiana” romana. La basilica è la più antica chiesa a pianta circolare di Roma. Risale addirittura al V secolo e sembra aver ospitato papa Gregorio Magno: nel VI secolo il grande pontefice, dottore della Chiesa, avrebbe predicato dalla cattedra marmorea che vi è tuttora conservata, ricavata da un sedile romano.
