Daily life scene along the Avenue of the Baobabs (Madagascar). HUMANKIND, my premium, limited-edition, museum-quality standard book featuring over 200 large-format photos. Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Avenue of the Baobabs is one of Madagascar’s most iconic landscapes. Located on the west coast in the Menabe region near the coastal town of Morondava, this dirt road is lined with centuries old Grandidier’s baobabs, some reaching about 30 meters in height with massive trunks that can exceed ten meters in diameter. These trees belong to the species Adansonia grandidieri, the largest of the baobabs endemic to Madagascar, and many are estimated to be between 800 and more than 1000 years old. The avenue is a relatively short stretch of road where around two dozen baobabs stand on both sides of the track, with more scattered across nearby fields and grasslands. Locally the trees are known as renala, meaning mother of the forest, reflecting their cultural importance. These baobabs are the remnants of a once dense tropical forest that covered this region. Over time most of the forest was cleared for agriculture, but the baobabs were often spared because local communities used their bark, fruit and leaves for food and traditional medicine. The avenue lies along Madagascar’s Route Nationale 8, an unpaved road that connects rural communities in western Madagascar. Trucks and off road vehicles share the road with bicycles, pedestrians and traditional wooden carts pulled by zebu, the humped cattle central to Malagasy farming. Today the Avenue of the Baobabs is one of the country’s best known natural attractions. Visitors often gather at sunrise and sunset when the warm light highlights the tall silhouettes of the trees. Protected as a natural monument since 2007, the avenue remains both a remarkable landscape and an active part of daily life in western Madagascar.
