Subjects : The South Downs is the U.K.'s newest area of Outstanding National Beauty to be designated a National Park. It offers some of the best natural rolling chalk hills, with some of the best fauna and fauna in the UK. Lots of attractive towns and villages. High hills with viewpoints offer amazing views. Some of these villages and towns continue with folk traditions centuries old that have died out elsewhere. Butterflies, orchids, ancient woodland and one of the best walking routes, the South Downs Way covers over 150km distance end to end! Despite being located south west of London, an area of the National Park has recently been declared a Dark Sky zone, great for Astronomical photography.
Recommended equipment : Gear for landscapes, long lenses for birds and macro lenses for the flowers and butterflies. Being England, in summer, you still need to be prepared for bad weather, so waterproof clothing is recommended!
Best months : Spring. Natural England looks fabulous and its best in the Spring, but other seasons still offer their particular attractions.
How to get there : From London, the A3 dual carriageway. Gatwick Airport is uncomfortably too close to the north east area of the Park, but this makes it easier to get to, if flying.
Visits : There are lots of free places to travel around and visit. Park the car and go walking!http://www.wealddown.co.uk/ The Weald & Down Open Air Museum is one of my favourites, quite expensive (around 20 Euro) but plenty to see and to photograph. They have taken many endangered buildings, from all ages, from the past nearly 1000 years and rebuilt them, showing how they were built and for why and the people who lived in them. I also like http://www.butserancientfarm.co.uk/ the Butser Hill Farm, which has recreated the same, but from much earlier times, from the Stone Age through to Roman times. I'm sure there are also many more places but I have yet to visit them. The National Park is one I am currently trying to explore further, when I can.
