Subjects :The necropolis of Saqqara is the largest of all Egypt and historically the most important. We are represented all the major dynasties, from I up to the Ptolemaic and Persian. At the center of the cemetery is the funerary complex of Zoser, the pharaoh founder of the Third Dynasty, around which huddle the other pyramids and mastabas (tombs for nobles with a square). The pyramid of Zoser was erected around 2770 BC by the architect Imhotep for medical and burial of the king had the idea to place more mastabas creating a sort of celestial scale in six steps giants. To the south of the Step Pyramid is the Pyramid of Unas, the pharaoh who closes the Fifth Dynasty. The major interest of this monument lies in having retained much of the "Pyramid Texts." Another interesting monument is the Serapeum, the ancient burial of the sacred Apis bulls. Around the other tombs and mastabas that make this site one of the most important in the world. Near to Darshur is the famous pyramid red pyramid or inclined, built by Pharaoh Sneferu, father of Pharaoh Khufu.
Recommended equipment :Wide-angle lens for landscapes, a good all-rounder quality as the 24-70 or 24-105. I also suggest a medium telephoto bright as the 70-200 to shoot some details or scenes of everyday life in the villages. Within some particularly dark monuments would be advised to carry around a flash. The use of flash can also serve to lighten the shadows on the faces marked projecting strong sunlight. To have an intense blue of the heavens also suggest the polarizing filter.
Best months :All year round, although the months of July and August are very hot since it is in the desert. However, the climate is very dry so very well bearable if well hydrated.
How to get there :British Airways is the national airline and has flights from Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino, but there is also that Alitalia flies over Cairo and other companies such as Turkish. To get to Saqquara hire a car with driver in Cairo or join an organized tour (depart from Cairo).
Visits :The Great Pyramids are in the middle of the desert and can be seen easily without the need of the ticket. For all other sites and tombs advise you to check schedules and days of closure on the website of Egyptian tourism or an updated guide.
