Subjects :Vultures of the Pyrenees, Egyptian vulture, gipeti and several birds of prey, all in abundance. The largest colony of Pyrenees vultures with more than 800 individuals is on site. The bearded vults are usually isolated or in the family of two or three individuals. Egyptians are always on their own, vultures even in groups of 20 or thirty when they spot a sheep carcass. Many wild mountain sheep in the area.
Recommended equipment :For animals flying from 300 mm up, if you go with the guide the 70/200 is ok because the animals approach up to a few meters. In flight only freehand shots, with the guide you can not use the easel or the monopod to not scare the animals. Essential binoculars.
Best months :They all have it, better off-season. It's very hot in summer. Contact by email the guide Manolo Jose of the association amigos dos buitre of Santa Cilia of Panzano to go on Saturdays (or agree otherwise ) when feeding them. Contribution to the fund 10 euros except several agreements for special exits. Manuel is a great connoisseur of the local fauna. For Vadiello go alone and get a trail card to climb to the altitude in the middle of the cliff. Beware of overhangs.
How to get there :Follow the signs to the small town of Huesca in Spain at the base of the Pyrenees. The sights are different but the main ones are Santa Cilia di Panzano (not to be confused with Santa Cilia by Jaca) and Vadiello near Loporzano just 10 km away. In Loporzano you can sleep at Casa Boleta shttp://www.boletas.org/. which is also the local ornithological house. In Santa Cilia you have to go with the Manolo guide to Vadiello even alone with breathtaking setting and dozens of vultures in flight. When you are on site just before the high rocks, a dirt road to the left uphill takes you to the height next to the huge cliff with the wrapped that pass by and lay on the nests. The environmental spectacle is breathtaking. Please note that in Spanish some countries write slightly differently. Also look for the Salto de Roldan always in the area.
Visits :Natural and very wild environment. Beware of overhangs and dangerous areas. Leave the car at the end of the road after the tunnels dug and start circling around the very high cliff. Stand in the high area and wait for the passage of the vultures that will not be long to glide without flapping their wings in the slightest. Don't make noise or sudden movements so they don't get away. dress as much as possible natural colors. They see at very long distances so it will be impossible not to be spotted, but if they are not frightened it approaches in flight up to a few tens of meters flying over you. Remember that it is not a zoo anyway and they are free and wild animals and you will see that in 1 minute they can fly a few kilometers in the mountains.
Notes :You can see many species of birds including some very rare. Gipeto, monk vulture, Egyptian vulture, golden eagles and many others. The ideal light is the sunset with the curly that is colored red. The whole valley is photographically spectacular.
