Subjects : The Island of Pianosa is dominated by Mediterranean flora and fauna, by naturalistic views interesting for the study of biodiversity as well as for the landscape photographer or astrophotography. The geographical position makes it a peculiar ecosystem being sufficiently far from the coast and light pollution for astronomical observations. Main subjects:Endemic floraMicroproductive faunaPassegesAstrophotographyArchitecture, views.

Recommended equipment : The photographic tools are many, certainly essential the use of wide-angle lenses to shoot the landscape and buildings of the village as well as: 1 Standard lenses (24-70 or 24-105) for hiking (trekking or mountain biking), macro (in the spring).2 Telephoto lenses for migratory fauna.3 Tripods. It is not recommended to transport heavy devices, more suitable gorillapod and "travel" versions. Since it is a marine environment, particular care must be taken in the protection of the equipment from the wind, from the saltiness, from the sand both during and after the excursion / use. Therefore, it is advisable to affix a UV filter on the lens to reduce damage to the same.

Best months : The most recommended period is undoubtedly from spring (flowering) to early autumn but it is also the one during which most visitors are concentrated. For the tourist not at his first time, Pianosa manages to catch his eye in the less hectic periods (from autumn to early spring) offering prospects of recovery each time unpublished.

How to get there : The landing in Pianosa takes place all year round, through two separate services:1. Ferries "Toremar" from Piombino https://www.toremar.it/it/tratte/tratte.html2. Aquavision ferries divided in the following order: 2.1. Marina di Campo – Pianosa 2.2. Piombino – Pianosa. Timetables, costs and reservations on the ferry service website: http://www.aquavision.it/

Visits : A landing fee (6 euros) must be added to the cost of the ferry. Excursions on the island are regulated by the Tuscan Archipelago Park.Reservations, contacts and info at the following addresses: https://infopark.sl3.eu/destination/2-pianosa/#servicecategory32https://www.parcoarcipelago.info/isola-di-pianosa/

Notes : The Island of Pianosa is immediately recognizable by the peculiar tabular morphology, between the Island of Elba and the Strait of Corsica. The geological structure includes sedimentary rocks of the neogenic-quaternary age rich in fossils (micro and macro). This structure is the basis of its primary wealth: abundant fresh water used in the past by the Romans for trade routes; in recent times, it has been exploited according to the agricultural-pastoral activities that have become sub-intensive in the last quarter of a century. The penal colony of Pianosa has undoubtedly been the distinctive element of recent decades but nothing detracts from the other wonders: archaeological remains from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages, early Christian catacombs second in extension only to those of the Capital of Christianity, unique faunal-floral and geological peculiarities. During the visits organized by the Park, you can admire its coves of white, pink, yellow ocher rock, shallow waters or cliffs dominated by the calls of birds and a crystal clear sea. On clear days, your gaze will range from the Tuscan coast, to the southern islands (Giglio and Montecristo) to the Corsican Chain with its whitewashed peaks. Visitors can move freely in the village and in the "Cala Giovanna", the largest beach of Pianosa, close to the port where the seabed tends to be sandy. However, it is strongly recommended to wear rock shoes because in some parts close to the shore the tabular rocky substrate may emerge that makes the entry or exit from the water slippery or difficult without them. Access to the rest of the island is forbidden and can take place either thanks to guided excursions or with permission issued by the Park Authority for research projects, study (naturalistic, geological for example).
