For night photographs when the monument lights up I recommend a good tripod.

Best months : There is no real recommended period for this place, I was there in August and the conditions seemed excellent. Considering, however, that you are high on the sea level I imagine that in winter it is quite cold even if the snow will certainly give interesting photo opportunities.

How to get there : Essentially the main international airport in the area is Denver. From here, you can drive about 360 miles (6 hours) in a rental car. Of course it should be included in a tour that could include the Black Hills or Badlands National Park or, why not, the Indian reservations. From here you can point to Cody and Yellowstone National Park.

Visits : The entrance is free, the monument is always open, you only pay for parking in front of the entrance which costs 10 dollars. If you arrive early in the morning and leave before 8pm the parking lot will be unattended and open so you can park for free. There are other free parking areas along the road, but they are reserved for residents or hikers along the trails.
