Subjects : The Mono Lake lies east of the sierra Nevada. It is a salty and alcalic lake. The characteristic about mono lake are the tufas. The tufas are limestone monoliths. They "grow" when fresh water flows into mono lake. You can best capture them in the south or north of the lake. Due to its high altitude and its remote location mono lake is ideal for capturing the milky way. The tufas give a brilliant foreground.

Recommended equipment : wide angle lens, tripod, remote release, ND filters for smoothing water at daylight, flashlight or flashes for lighting the tufas at night.

Best months : The summer months suit best because then it is not so cold and the milky way is high up in the sky.

How to get there : From the west coast you can get there through Yosemite NP via the Tioga Pass road. From Vegas I would recommend driving through death valley and up the highway to Lee Vining. Take a night in Lee Vining to enjoy the nightsky at mono lake.

Visits : If you drive through Yosemite you have to pay the national park fee. At south tufa in the south of mono lake there is a parking lot with a box for the parking fee.
