Subjects :To be seen mainly the three sites of the pyramids, very interesting the Nile and its cultivated fields, possible visits to the villages where to interact with the local population local population. The Sahara desert, here Eastern desert, with its dunes and its golden sand. Don't miss the sunset in the desert. Magical atmosphere.
Recommended equipment :Definitely a wide angle, a standard zoom and even a medium tele would make a lot of sense. There is no problem to photograph the local population always very well available and curious. Always ask permission anyway. I would also recommend a tripod for amazing photos at sunset or sunrise.
Best months :You have to plan the trip absolutely in our winter where you will find however temperatures that in the daytime that skim the 38 degrees. The climate is very dry and therefore very bearable, but it is impossible to tackle this trip in summer from May to September where the temperatures on site are really prohibitive. December and January there is a decent temperature hike, but in the evenings it never really gets cold.
How to get there :Air flight to Khartum, very convenient from Italy with Turkish via Istanbul or EgyptAir via Cairo. In 2018-2019 this flight costs about 600-700 euros depending on the operator and where it matches. From Khartum, with 4x4 you walk along the comfortable paved road that runs along the Nile and leads to Atbara. The site is located 250 Km north of Khartum and 25 kilometres from Shendi.
Visits :Archaeological site of Meroe which is divided into three groups of pyramids dating from the time of the reign of Kush (VIII century B.C.): Necropolis North and Necropolis East plus a third (less beautiful) closer to the River Nile. Of the permission to photograph and the entrance fee will take care of your agency/guide. The cameras pay a very high supplement (approx. $50). Do not miss the sunset on the pyramids where everything is tinges with gold. Highly recommended to sleep near. There are great facilities. This is the only archaeological site in Sudan along with Karima where there are tourist facilities.
Notes :Watch out for the visa release. If you want to make yourself aware that the visa is valid for one month from when it is released (so within a month you have to enter Sudan) and you need prior authorisation from the Embassy of Sudan and letter of invitation from the Sudanese tourist agency. Attention, according to The provisions currently in force (07/03/2019) If you are planning a trip to the U.S.A. after travelling to Sudan, you need to apply for a tourist visa. ESTA is not accepted. For the U.S. secretariat of State, Sudan, Iran, North Korea, Syria and Iraq are considered high-risk. The undersigned did not however have any problem in requesting tourist visa U.S. regularly issued (in my case) from the consulate in Milan despite my recent trips to Sudan and Syria.
