Subjects :The small church of Maria Hilf is located in Carinthia (Austria) near the village of Guttaring. On the spot it is possible to photograph the church itself, which although it offers a very bare exterior, rewards the photographer with the richly decorated interior. But the most interesting subject is the surrounding landscape. The church is situated on a hill in the midst of the Carinthian woods from where it is possible to photograph the surrounding valleys.
Recommended equipment :Wide angle lens for the exterior of the church as it is not possible to get away enough to be able to take the façade in its entirety otherwise. A tripod is recommended.
Best months :Late spring/Summer
How to get there :The place can be reached mainly by car. Located a quarter of an hour from the village of Guttaring (near Friesach). Guttaring is in turn reachable in an hour from Villach (Villaco) or an hour and a half from Graz.
Visits :Access to the church as in front of the square is free. The church (like all in Austria) is always open as it is equipped with an internal gate that is opened only during the masses. It does not affect the possibility of making good photos of the interiors. There is also a typical family-run restaurant in the immediate vicinity of the church.
