Subjects :The lake (bog) Modenese Apennines is located at 1310 meters above sea level at the end of the last ice age formed a lake of its own. The lake, the Park of the Frignano, partly because of aquatic plants that cover almost all has become a peat bog, the only case in the whole Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The vegetation palaustre also includes the rare carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia. And 'possible to photograph flowers, insects, reptiles, wild horses, wild boar, deer, hawks, as well as landscapes / scenery. Wolves have also been reported, but it is virtually impossible to meet.
Recommended equipment :Definitely recommend a macro lens and a wide angle for landscapes. Also a useful medium telephoto (eg 70-200) for horses and other wildlife. Less useful perspective long.
Best months :Every season of interest. In winter there is not really macro fauna and even photos are uninteresting. May be suggestive landscapes. With the snow the road is not passable and you are faced with a walk of about 5 km. The difference is small but it takes snowshoes to avoid sinking into the snow. In the autumn colors of the trees are beautiful. In summer you can photograph many wild horses (with a little patience even galloping) and beautiful starry skies at night (there are no overhead lights). The spring - early summer is the best time for macros: the surrounding meadows are full of flowers and insects (butterflies, caterpillars, bees, hornets, locusts). Always present dragonflies. They are also already got the horses.
How to get there :From Modena take the "valley" in the direction Fanano and just before the left to go down to the river. Then climb up to Serrazzone and take the paved road again after about 5-6 km reach Cà del Vento (small group of houses). From there the road is not paved and you get to the lake after 4 km. The road is also normal utilitare, provided they are not too low to the ground. Bella the walk. The lake is accessible by several paths. A Cà del Vento you can park. The road ends about 200 meters before the lake with a bar (and pedestrian). Serves to prevent the horses take the road (although always find a way out!). From Modena city is around 70 km drive takes an hour and a half (going with convenient). At the lake there are some places for picnics (for a fire) and a source of drinking water (but you have to go down a path to circ 300m). Except in a few days a year (eg August 15) the lake is not very popular and there is no annoying crowds. In the spring, I often found myself alone even on weekends.
Visits :Admission is free and completely free. There are times. You could not camp, but if you stay a night in a tent there are no particular problems. I suggest, if the weather is nice, to gaze at the stars before getting out.
Notes :The lake has plenty of water but it is really impressive. Very nice walk on the path along the lake. The place is also suitable for families and for the picnic area for lawns.
