Best months : Košice is a true treasure among Slovak cities.Enjoy the engaging atmosphere of the Old Town – the largest historical area in Slovakia. The vibing Hlavná street and magical alleys closeby form the true heart of Košice, a place with unique atmosphere, soul and love. Discover monumental buildings of the Cathedral and churches, palaces, charming nooks, synagogues and places with troubled history. Get immersed into stories that cannot be offered by any other city. The remains of the lower city gate were discovered during extensive reconstruction works on Hlavná street in 1996 and 1997. In a unique archeological complex breathing with history, we can see the remaining parts of the city fort, that started to be constructed in the second half of the 13th century and finished by building further fortifications in between years 1706 - 1710. The Cathedral of St. Elizabeth was built in high Gothic style and dedicated to St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Construction started around 1380 and was divided into several stages and finished in 1508. Aside of the breath-taking exterior, the cathedral hides a precious interior as well, where namely the altar of St. Elizabeth with 48 images, the hanging sculpture of Immaculata and the late Gothic wing altar of the Visiting Virgin Mary captivate those who wander inside. The chapel, build on the place of a former city cemetery, with its overground part being built in the 14th century, served as an ossuary in the beginning. The statue of Archangel Michael is placed above the entrange and shows him weighing the souls of the dead, accompanied by the statues of apostles Peter and Paul. Eighteen gravestones from the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth and the former cemetery are placed in the walls of the chapel as well. The Immaculata is a 14 meter tall memorial of the plague standing on a stone pedestal built in years 1722 to 1723. A sculpture of Virgin Mary is on top of it, whereas sculptures of Joseph, Sebastian and Ladislaus are placed on each side respectively. The memorial was raised on the initiative of a post custodian, Victor Flachenfeld, on the place of a former execution ground as a token of gratitude for averting the plague epidemic, wars and famine. Before the House of Art, a magnificent building of the first synagogue Košice stood in its place since 1867 until it was razed to the ground in the early 1960s. Next to it, during 1926 and 1927, an impressive neological synagogue for 1100 people was built, characterized by a huge oval cupola with diameters of 21 and 24 meters that resembles the Roman pantheon that has been preserved in its slightly altered condition. On Zvonárska street, a beautiful example of Maori style in the form of the oldest preserved synagogue in Košice built in 1883 discreetly stands in between all of the houses. Right next to it is the entrance to the Jewish religious community and to the building of the prayer room. The oldest ritual bath mikveh, as well as the rabbi's flat, the space and flat for the butcher, the kosher kitchen, the governing hall, office and health center of the community can be found in the courtyard. Puškinova street is where one can find a reconstructed orthodox synagogue and the adjacent Jewish school. These buildings are the work of ?udovít Oelschläger and Hugo Kaboš from the late 1930s. This orthodox synagogue represents a unique combination of historical elements as well as elements of modern style, especially cubism. The chapel St. Michael`s, build on the place of a former city cemetery, with its overground part being built in the 14th century, served as an ossuary in the beginning. The statue of Archangel is placed above the entrange and shows him weighing the souls of the dead, accompanied by the statues of apostles Peter and Paul. Eighteen gravestones from the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth and the former cemetery are placed in the walls of the chapel. In the arms of the Tatras and the Slovenský raj National Park, there are several cultural-historical sites registered in the UNESCO list that await your visit. The pilgrimage begins at the Spiš castle, that is one of the most remarkable landmarks in Europe. Your road then leads you to the medieval town of Levoča, where treasures of the historical center are protected by a preserved fortification system.
