Subjects : Kauai is one of the islands in the Hawaii Archipelago. Locally it is called 'Kaua'i'. For a reference, the original movie 'Jurassic Park' was filmed here.It is volcanic island with highly irregular topography and has tropical weather. As a result it is very green everywhere and is rich in tropical plants, animals and fish. The mountains have most impressive deep canyons with a multitude of waterfalls all over the place. At the interface of mountains and the ocean is the Napali Coast Park which would impress anyone for sure. I did not see that much of it as the trip is not appropriate for kids- it requires boat access, helicopter access or extensive hiking (family vacation). The beaches and the waves are quite fantastic as well. There is a beach at the city of Hanalei, where you have beach with mountain view with waterfalls! Overall it is easily the most beautiful place I have ever visited (I have not traveled nearly as much as some of you, so take this note with caution). There are lots of opportunities for photography- animals, plants, fish; there are people on beaches, surfing and hiking. Last but not least canyons, waterfalls, fantastic viewpoints.
Recommended equipment : You need a good general zoom lens, telephoto and ultra-wide angle for some of the tight shots, tripod. For insects and plants a good macro lens. For better yet shots some hiking is required so bring your preferred hiking equipment and good shoes. It rains a lot so bring a thin rain proof jacket.
Best months : The island of Kauai is the highest raining area in both intensity and duration in all of USA. I would avoid the summer which is exceedingly hot and very rainy. Visiting October-February is best (IMHO) as there are fewer overall tourists, less rain and is still plenty hot to enjoy the beach and the hiking. No need for warm clothing!
How to get there : Flight from Los Angeles or San Francisco is about 5 hours away. There are other available flights from continental USA. The prices fluctuate a lot, with care and some patience an excellent deal can be found.
Visits : The parks are generally free. There are boat cruises that may take you to the Napali cost from the ocean side. They cost about 200 USD and a two week reservation is necessary as they are very popular. There are helicopter rentals prices around 300-350 USD (did not use). There are snorkeling rentals that are inexpensive. The goods are delivered by air or cargo ship and as result Hawaii is quite expensive in food and lodging. There are multiple private arrangements possible that may reduce costs.
Notes : Most fantastic place to visit. Came back a month ago and I am already thinking about the next time.
