Subjects : Katskhi Monastery (Katskhi Pillar) is a 16th-century Georgian Orthodox church located on a 40-meter-high rock pillar. It is known as the most isolated church in the world and resembles, in a small way, the Greek Meteors. On the site, which once housed a community of monks, only one hermit now resides. Access to the top, which can only be reached via an old and dangerous iron staircase, is strictly regulated and in fact reserved only for the hermit.

Recommended equipment : The monolith is visible from afar and from some vantage points so a tele is recommended. At the foot of the monolith, on the other hand, it is advisable to have a wide angle.

Best months : In autumn, to capture the colors of the surrounding foliage, and in the afternoon hours, when the light illuminates the pillar from the side.

How to get there : The site can be reached by car by exiting the E60 (which connects Tbilisi to Kutaisi) at Zestaponi and continuing on the Gomi-Sachkhere-Chiatura-Zestaponi road for about 30 minutes. To reach the base of the monolith, the last stretch of about a hundred meters slightly uphill must be covered on foot.

Visits : The site is open every day from 9 am to 8 pm. Admission is free.
