Subjects :The Jozani Forest is located on the island of Zanzibar (Tanzania) and, together with the Chwaka Bay Lagoon, is the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, established in 2003 and covering an area of ??approximately 50 km². The only place in the world where it is possible to meet the Zanzibar Red Colobo (Piliocolobus kirkii), endemic of the island, which boasts a population of about 500 specimens. Another monkey present is the white-tailed cervus (Cercopithecus albogularis). The mammals present (but not easily visible) include Ader's cephalophobia (Cephalophus adersi), a small threatened extinct antelope, the sonnet (Neotragus moschatus) and the genus Zanzibar servalina (Genetta servalina archeri). At the avifauna level, we find some endemic species such as Fischer turaco (Tauraco fischeri subsp. Zanzibaricus), greenish bulbul (Eurillas virens subsp. Zanzibaricus), nettarinia chiazzerosse (Cyanomitra veroxii subsp. Zanzibar), western olive olives (Cyanomitra obscura subsp. Grants) and Zanzibar bearded nightgown (Cercotrichas quadrivirgata subsp. Greenwayi). Other species - with great luck and patience - it is possible to observe in the park are: Powphalus cryptoxanthus, Halcyon senegaloides fisherman, Lamprotornis corruscus, East Atlantic akelat ( Sheppard gunningi) and the red bishop of Zanzibar (Euplectes nigroventris). Among amphibians is worth mentioning the endemic frog of Jozani (Kassina jozani).
Recommended equipment :I recommend a wide-angle and medium-sized canvases for monkeys. For birds the classic long canvases.
Best months :All year round. As far as I'm concerned, I was in August (winter in Zanzibar) and I had great photographic opportunities especially for monkeys.
How to get there :The Forest can be reached by car / taxi from any resort on the island of Zanzibar. From Kendwa you arrive in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Visits :To enter, you must pay a ticket at the entrance (about 10 USD) and you will be accompanied throughout the trip by a professional guide.
Notes :I recommend visiting early in the morning or late afternoon when there are no organized tour groups.
