Subjects : Cousin of the most famous Isle of Skye, with which it shares the harshness and grandeur of the landscapes, the Isle of Mull is one of the most renowned destinations in the United Kingdom to spot european otters: it is also famous for the presence of various nesting pairs of Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles, so much so that it is nicknamed "the island of eagles". The rich fauna of Mull also includes a large population of Deer and Fallow deer, which can be seen especially in the inland hilly areas and in the large grassy meadows on the sides of the roads that connect the very few inhabited centers of the island. The list of sighted subjects also includes: Harrier, Marsh Owl, Sea Woodcock, Puffin, Sule, Sea Magpies, Urians, Stoles, various species of Shorebirds and Anatids.Starting from the island you can reach the archipelago of the Treshnish Islands in about 45 minutes of navigation: among these, the main destinations are Lunga (which houses a colony of puffins and one of the largest European colonies of Urie) and the island of Staffa, with its characteristic columnar basalt walls and the famous Fingal cave.

Recommended equipment : A 400mm or rather 500mm (on FF) is the choice of choice to photograph otters and ungulates. For other subjects, especially at Treshnish, even a 300mm can be enough (in Long the puffins can be photographed with 50mm!) A wide angle for landscapes is essential!

Best months : As for the climate, July is definitely the best month to visit Mull, as the rainfall is lower than the rest of the year and it is easier to have beautiful days: in any case, the weather of Mull is typically Atlantic and Scottish or ... totally unpredictable. Get ready to go out with the waterproof cape even when the sky is completely clear outside without a cloud in sight! The summer period offers the best opportunities to photograph the birdlife, with the arrival of seabirds that reach the mainland to reproduce. October is instead an excellent month for the roar, since the subjects are on average more confident than in our country. Otters can be photographed all year round.

How to get there : The easiest way to get to Mull is to reach the town of Oban and from there take the ferry, which in about half an hour crosses the narrow arms of the sea that separates the island from the Scottish mainland. To get to Oban you can fly either to Edinburgh (undoubtedly the most comfortable choice for the number of options available) or to Inverness - the choice depends on how you want to organize the rest of the trip. Either way, the road to drive through iconic places in the Scottish Highlands, you'll love every mile you travel.

Visits : The island can be visited without any kind of restriction. The Scottish Outdoor Code allows free transit even through fields, fences and in general private properties (which are not appurtenances of homes) as long as they do not cause any damage to the passage.

Notes : Apart from the road that connects Craignure to the capital Tobermory and a few other exceptions, the roads of the island are single track roads, or two-way but single-lane roads, equipped with special roadside pitches that allow cars to cross without having to retrace their steps. For this reason, always consider that the travel times are on average longer than what the simple distance from the destination could suggest.
