Subjects : The Geological formation Ischigualasto contains deposits of the Carnic period, belonging to the geological era of the Triassic (230 million years ago), with remains of the oldest known dinosaurs; these fossils are among the most important in the world in terms of number, quality and importance. This is the only place in the world where almost all of the Triassic is represented in an undisturbed sequence of rock deposits. Once the whole valley was crossed by rivers generated by floodplains, now it has turned everything like an immense desert. The arid lands surrounding the Ischigualasto formation are known as the Moon Valley because of their appearance. The most common finds of the Park are represented by fossils of various species of dinosaurs. In the early 1990s, an important fossil of a dinosaur with primitive features, called Eoraptor lunensis, was found in Ischigualasto. In 2000 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Talampaya National Park.

Recommended equipment : a good 24-70 or similar. If you make the night visitwith the full moon, I also recommend a supertele.

Best months : year round

How to get there : I drove about 4 hours from Mendoza. I recommend stopping overnight and booking a "cabana" in the adjacent villages.

Visits : Admission is paid, from 9am to 5pm, a guide stands in front of the caravan and reaches a discreet group (about 7/10 vehicles), will take you along a 40 km route. It is possible to make night visits when there is a full moon.

Notes : All I'm telling you is that I'm blown away!
