Subjects : Birds, General Plains Game such as Warthog, Kudu, Zebra, Giraffe, Common Duiker, Nyala, Impala. Also at night possibilities for Bush Babies, Porcupines, Aarvark, Genet. This a fenced estate but both Hyena and Leopard do come onto the property at night but are heard more than seen. The main reason to stay on the Estate is there are properties you can rent and stay in, you can drive around the tracks on the estate and photograph the game on the property but also because Hoedspruit is a gateway town to the Kruger National Park. The Orpen Gate of the Kruger National is about 35 minutes from Hoedspruit.
Recommended equipment : Good quality DSLR. I took Nikon d850, 500mm F4, 70-200mm F2.8, 50mm 1.8 and 1.4tc. If you can only take one lens good options are Sigma 60-600 or 150-600, Tamron 150-600, Canon 100-400 or Nikon 200-500.
Best months : Best Months of the year are in the dry season which is from May/June to end of September. There is less thick vegetation making animal spotting easier.
How to get there : From Johannesburg you can fly into Hoedspruit and and use a shuttle service or taxi to Hoedspruit. Airlines is SA Airlink and I think South African Airways also. You can also self drive from Johannesburg directly to Hoedspruit. Drive time with one break stop is around 5 and a half hours. There is also a daily mini van shuttle service from Johannesburg. Shuttle service is with Ashton's.
Visits : There are no fees.
