Subjects : West facing Beach with Driftwood, native rainforest, New Zealand's Southern Alps, Sunset illuminating Snow covered moutains, sunrise behind snow capped mountains. Nearby are glaciers (helicopter flights available).
Recommended equipment : Gillespies Beach has a very basic camp site. Bring tent or camper van to stay overnight (recommended as light conditions at sunset and sunrise are amazing). Camera, your preferred landscape lens. Tele lenses or even Supertele lenses offer amazing views of the mountains. Tripod to catch night sky and sunset and sunrise.
Best months : All year round. Winter offers better night skies, summer offers warmer weather. I#d recommend August and February as often these months seem to have a fair chance of stable weather.
How to get there : You can reach this spot only by car. Locals will prefer their own, overseas tourists a rental. Leave the Haast Highway in Fox Glacier and turn into the Cook Flat Road. Take then the Gillespies Beach Road and follow the signs to the DOC camp site.
Visits : Visit is free, camping might require small camp fee (< 10 USD)
