Rank : 10.0 (average on 2 votes)

If you know this place, give your vote:

Coordinates : 8.544137, -83.563034 (Open in Google Maps)

Subjects : Many species of birds (macao and scarlet macaws, woodpeckers, vultures, toucans, crested caracara and many others), mammals (various types of monkeys, peccaries, tapirs, coatis, anteaters, sloths etc ..).

Recommended equipment : Wide angle for landscapes, macro lens for frogs and snakes, canvases for fauna and birdlife. Within the rainforest, light is scarce, so it is advisable to light lenses or camera bodies that discreetly hold the high ISO.

Best months : From mid-December to the end of March. Absolutely to be avoided during the rainy season.

How to get there : The park has four access sectors (Los Patos, Leona, San Pedrillo and Sirena) but there are no roads to get there. With an excellent 4x4 off-road vehicle (better if raised for the numerous fords) you can reach Drake Bay quite easily, and from here take a boat to the park the next morning (Sirena sector, we did so). Alternatively you can also reach Drake Bay by boat from Sierpe. Outside the dry season most of the secondary roads to reach the sectors are impassable.

Visits : Since 2014 it is possible to visit the Park only with an authorized local guide. There are several lodges to stay overnight in the park, which can be booked through organized multi-day tours. It is however possible to visit the park even only in the day, buying a ticket of $ 80, from 7 to 16 with lunch included.

Notes : One of the national parks with the greatest biodiversity in the world. To be able to visit it discreetly it is advisable to spend at least one night inside the Park.
