Subjects :Bolafjall is a 638-meter-high mountain located not far from the town of Bolungarvík in northwestern Iceland. The top of the mountain is flat and barren, allowing for a great view in all directions. At the highest point there is a spherical construction that contains an air defense radar, currently available to the Icelandic coast guard. There is also a pedestrian walkway that allows you to lean further out of the mountain. From this plateau it is possible to admire the beautiful Ísafjarðardjúp fjord, to the northeast the Hornstrandir nature reserve, the Greenland Sea to the north and east and the mountain ranges to the south.
Recommended equipment :Wide angles are recommended for panoramas, but also medium telephoto and telephoto for details and close-up shots. Of course, a tripod is also recommended and possibly a good ballast since the wind whips with some vigor.
Best months :The road, steep and unpaved, is open only in July and August. The temperature is cold.
How to get there :The summit of Bolafjall can be reached starting from the town of Bolungarvik and traveling, for about 8/9 km, a dirt road and quite steep, but well maintained, it is not necessary to off-road vehicle. At the top there is a tidy parking lot. It is about half an hour's drive (just over 20 km) from the town of Ísafjörður which houses both a naval port and a small airport for domestic flights. Here you can rent cars.
Visits :Visits are free, but limited to the months of July and August. Parking is paid, but there are no toilets.
