Subjects : The Arabuko-Sokoke reserve is a Kenya forest that occupies about 420 km² and is run by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS). It is the largest and most intact costal forest in all of eastern Africa and houses 20% of bird species and 30% of the species of butterflies from all over Kenya. It is also possible to find at least 24 rare and endemic species of birds, mammals and butterflies. Mammals: The forest hosts 40 species of mammals and is the natural habitat of many species of endemic animals of small and large size, such as, for example, the dwarf elephant of Arabuko-Sokoke, the cat of the Arabuko-Sokoke and the Elephant Shrew. In addition to the above mentioned species you can find many colonies of monkeys, in particular of baboons, buffwings and elephants. For the watering of animals in the most arid seasons, the Kenya Wildlife Service, with the help of funding from private individuals, has created an artificial pool where, especially in the evening hours and with a little luck, you can see some elephants. Birds: The park houses over 270 species of birds including rare and endemic species such as, for example, the weaver of Clark, the nectarine of Amani and the Picop of Sokoke. It is an ideal destination for birdwatchers as well as a transit point for many bird species. Reptiles and Amphibians: The park is home to 49 species of reptiles and 25 amphibians.

Recommended equipment : For the avifauna from 500 mm up, for the monkeys is sufficient a 300mm

Best months : All year round even if the best period is from July to October.

How to get there : The forest can be reached by car from any resort on the southern coast of Kenya. It is about 110 km from the town of Mombasa, 10 km from the town of Malindi and 5 from the village of Watamu.

Visits : Tickets can be purchased at the entry point between the 06.00 and the 18.00. There is the possibility to use expert guides of the Arabuko-Sokoke forest Guides Association (ASFGA) to explore the forest.

Notes : I recommend visiting early in the morning or late afternoon. Bring water and insect repellant with you.
