Subjects :The island of Aero (the Danish name is Ærø, unpronounceable for me) is a concentrate of Denmark. It is a narrow island about 30 km long that can be traveled both by car/motorbike and by bike. It has a few built-up centers with colorful half-timbered houses along cobbled streets. It has long beaches of fine sand, and a couple of them are home to rows of colorful wooden cabins. The interior of the island is mainly countryside, with long stretches of wheat fields that slope down to the sea but there is no shortage of historic houses, lighthouses and mills to visit. The main town and port (Aeroskobing) is a very picturesque place and worth the visit alone.
Recommended equipment :I suggest both a wide-angle lens and a telephoto and of course a tripod for those who want to take long exposures.
Best months :We stayed here in mid-August on a very windy and sometimes rainy day with less than 15 degrees. Although it's a vacation spot for Danes, we found fewer people than I would have expected, so it wasn't a problem to take pictures of picturesque views without people in the frame. I am convinced that the island is interesting to visit all year round, weather permitting.
How to get there :The island can only be reached by ferry but access is very simple. For those who transit from the island of Fyn along the E20 highway and stop in Odense, as we did, it is necessary to consider about 1 hour by car to get to one of the ports of departure and arrival of the ferries, which are Faaborg and Svendborg to which must be added about 1 hour for the crossing. Ferries are easily booked online. The cost for 4 people with a car was 87 euros (August 2023) round trip. The interior of the island can be easily traveled by car.
Visits :Access to the island is always allowed but of course the arrival and departure times of the ferries must be taken into account.
Notes :We made the outward journey from Odense to Faaborg and from there we took the ferry to Soby, on the west end of the island. From there we crossed the entire island to the east end where Marstal is located. Finally we headed to Aeroskobing where we stayed a few hours and from where we took the return ferry to Svendborg. For those who have only one day available and travel by car I would suggest to do the same tour. Alternatively, for those who only have half a day and/or do not want to bring a car, you can limit yourself to arriving and staying in Aeroskobing, which alone offers many photo opportunities. For those who have more time available, probably the best option is to stay at least one night and discover all the evocative places that this island offers.
