“ Hi Everyone. I just wanted to update you on the situation on the Canon 'R' and the new 24-300mm lens.
As many of you will know, especially those of you who have bought the new lens, it switches off ME mode in the camera - much to our surprise and disappointment. If you have bought the lens Canon have offered to give you a full refund if you wish to return it.
It seems that it is down to the way the software and processing hardware in the camera is working with the lens to achieve the image quality that the lens is capable of that has meant they have to disable the ME functionality.
Of course, multiple exposures, to Canon is a niche (but of growing interest) market and by far the majority of users won't have even noticed this change. They understand our frustration and although this doesn't help us, it is apparently impossible to produce a lens at the cost and with the processing power of the camera to also enable it to make ME images while maintaining image quality. It is not and will not be possible to correct this with a firmware upgrade - the camera simply can't cope with making ME images with this lens.
The big question is, how will future lenses be affected? Apparently some might and some might not. It does seem that lenses will be released that can make ME images with the 'R' and I suspect (but do not know for sure) that they will be the larger and more expensive higher quality lenses which do not place such a high demand on the processing power of the camera due to their optical superiority.
However, I think the outcry over this lens has caused quite a stir at Canon and they will now make sure it is apparent which lenses are affected so a decision can be made before purchase. It is also worth noting that all old EOS lenses do work with the system with the adapter.
So the situation is not clear cut and each of us can only make our own decision on whether to buy into the 'R' system (or stay with it). There are for's and against's certainly for the ME shooter. I am certain this issue will have put some of you off and that is understandable - all I can do is pass on the facts as I have them and let you decide how to proceed.
I know this is not what you want to hear but I hope this update has clarified the situation and will help you make decisions about which way you go with your camera and lens purchases. „
