“ UPDATE: We've tried out the new firmware on a Smart Adapter IV paired with a few lenses (Canon 35mm F1.4L II, 70-200 F2.8L II IS, Sigma 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm F1.4 Art) on the Sony a7R II. Phase-detect functionality appears to be limited to a very small central regions, which means lots of hunting if using off-center points, or Lock-on AF and Eye AF (both in AF-C) for non-central subjects. While AF in video is possible, it's slow with significant hunting. At this point, with these lenses, we find this update largely useless, and found ourselves reverting to the 'Green' mode that was default prior to this update for best performance. „ |

Concordo con l'ultimo commento. Il 35 mm Sigma su A7RII sembra quasi peggiorare. Il nuovo aggiornamento credo sia più utile per fotocamere prive di messa a fuoco phase-detect (la prima generazione di A7). Se da un lato il sistema riconosce occhi, visi, quadri, ecc e li insegue benissimo, la cosa peggiora nei punti laterali, dove l'inseguimento del soggetto continua, ma la lente non riesce a mettere a fuoco. Io il vantaggio enorme lo trovo nella messa a fuoco manuale con ingrandimento e distanza, che però c'era già prima, usando l'advanced mode (ma così non devo switchare ogni volta il Metabones). |

I just downloaded the V5.2 firmware that was released today, June 30th. After a little "training", it now works great with my Canon 24-70mm f2.8 II in "Advanced Mode". I can now use outlying focus points and also utilize Eye Focus. It also focuses fast in really dim light with focus points near the edge of the frame(!).
This updated adapter has taken another step toward "seamless" performance, narrowing the gap to native FE lenses. In fact, I do not think that my G Master lens will do much better. Of course, Continuous focus could be another matter - that is for testing on another day.
I am really impressed with Metabones' quick response to this problem! Thank you, Metabones!
Io credo sia solo una questione di tempo ormai, si potranno esserci dei problemi di qua o di là ancora per un annetto ma alla fine le ottiche Canon saranno pienamente utilizzabili senza limitazioni (se non per l'autofocus dolce in video) su macchine Sony... |

Testato il nuovo firmware. Il tracking ai bordi è effettivamente migliorato. Incredibile come aggancia il soggetto e come lo riaggancia anche quando questo è uscito dalla foto e poi rientra. Il fuoco sul soggetto trackato però è ancora molto carente. L'andirivieni dell'autofocus c'è ancora quando il soggetto si trova ai bordi. Sono ritornato al classico e performante autofocus a contrasto di fase (green), adesso disponibile di nuovo come opzione standard. Per la cronaca: le prove le ho fatte sulla mia Sony A7RII con Sigma 35 Art. |

Con il Canon 24-70 F2,8 II e 70-200 f2,8 II invece sembra andare benone, ulteriore conferma qui.... In ogni caso in metabones sono dei co....., hanno fatto una pessima figura quando bastava aspettare tre giorni per fare un impressione decisamente migliore
I was just playing around with my two MBIV adapters (V5.0 & V5.2) using the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 II and 70-200mm f2.8 II lenses. Since I shoot wide-open so often, focus and recompose does not work well, so I rely on the outlying focus points - particularly for portrait work.
The V5.0 adapter in either Green or Advanced mode worked horribly with these lenses on the outlying focus points (much, much worse than V4.8 firmware). The adapter with V5.2 on Advanced Mode works amazingly well with both lenses on outlying focus points and relatively low light. It seems to work a lot better on Advanced Mode than it does on Green Mode.
The box outline in the viewfinder is small on Advanced Mode, which I would assume indicates that PDAF would not be enabled outside of the box; however, focus is fast with focus points far outside of this box... even in really low light. I am a bit confused by all this, but it doesn't really matter since it simply works.
I was initially upset about the horrible performance of V5.0, but I am now really happy with V5.2. Eye Focus works as well as with native FE lenses. |
