Flores & Komodo Island NP Indonesia
Flores island and it's main port Labuan Bajo are the gateway to Komodo Island National Park. Komodo Island National Park is also visited by cruise ships. Flores island has direct flights to and from Bali that take about 60 minutes. There are 2 main islands in the national park that have the dragons, Komodo and Rinca. There are wooden boats and fibre glass speed boats that can take you to the islands. 3-3.5hrs on the wooden boat and 1.5hrs on the speed boat to Komodo and 2-2.5hrs and 40minutes respectively for Rinca.
The walks on the island trails average about 1.5 hours. The Islands are large with most parts inaccessible. A moderate level of fitness is required and no matter what time of year it will be hot. There are about 1500 dragons on each island.Try and avoid late June and July as this is the dragon mating season and the dragons head for the hills for some mummy and daddy time. This means many tourists do not see any dragons at this time of year. We did day trips to both Komodo 13 August and Rinca 14 August.
We saw 9 dragons on Komodo and 12 on Rinca. The biggest dragons on Komodo are slightly bigger than the biggest dragons on Rinca. On our trip we saw a greater variety of ages for dragons on Rinca. You will see most of the dragons near the ranges stations but we also saw a number on the forest trails. As always this is the wild so there are are never any guarantees what you will see.
The area is also famous for it's underwater life so there are many opportunities for divers. Most trips to the dragons will have a a stop for snorkling included. Flores/Labuan Bajo is also known for it's spectacular sunsets/sunrises and there are a number of establishments that are positioned to take advantage of these.
