snapshot.canon-asia.com/article/en/rf70-200mm-f28l-is-usm-6-things-you

d1hjkbq40fs2x4.cloudfront.net/2019-11-08/files/RF70-200mm_f2.8_IS_USM_

" Furthermore, the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM was designed purposely to not use an extender: This decision was made to give absolute priority to a lightweight design. The EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM EF mount limitation and space for the extender gave it a long back focus distance. however, the length was significantly shortened thanks to the RF mount, resulting in a completely new optical design. All of our techniques and technologies were consolidated to give top priority to a compact, lighheight design to bring advantages to all users."

www.dpreview.com/interviews/6888036612/canon-interview-eos-1d-x-mark-i

Cito alcuni stralci:

"- How did you decide which features to update compared to the EOS-1D X Mark II?

There were a variety of factors. We get a lot of requests from our professional users, and we're always listening to what they need. Their demands are sometimes very detailed! But we have to listen to their requests. In addition, we have to look at our technology - what kind of technology can meet those demands.

We then integrate [those pieces of information] and decide internally what we should include in the next model. In this new camera we've improved performance [in several areas] , such as autofocus, networking and so on, which we'll explain later in detail.

- What were the main requests from users of the 1D X and 1D X II?

One important thing was the weight of the camera, and second, autofocus performance. We made sure there is no compromise in the AF performance of the new camera. And number three is network performance, which is very important [for wire services] - how fast you can put images into publication. We thought that there was room for improvement in that aspect of the camera's performance. Lastly, image quality is of course a big thing. We worked on noise reduction, as well as high sensitivity image performance.

Also keep in mind that we have put a lot of effort into improving movie shooting performance as well as stills.

- Why did you make the decision to change the memory card type to CFexpress?

Speed. In terms of read and write speed, these cards are immensely faster than previous solutions. CFexpress is more than twice as fast as CFast. It has more development potential.

- This is the first high-end camera Canon has released since the EOS R. Are your high-end and professional customers asking for a mirrorless solution?

Of course some professional photographers are asking for a mirrorless solution. But as of now, we also see a lot of demand from photographers asking for DSLRs, specifically [because of] the benefits of an OVF. So this time around we decided to go for a DSLR. Of course we understand that there are huge benefits to mirrorless, and we implemented, or combined as much of that [technology] as we could into the [EOS-1D X Mark III] .

For example one of the things that we implemented from the mirrorless side was the ability to shoot at 20fps using electronic shutter. And autofocus performance, specifically subject tracking is on par with some of today's top-notch mirrorless cameras."

avatarCanon 1dx mark iii, breve video

www.newsshooter.com/2019/10/27/canon-1dx-mark-iii-first-look/

"1. Newly developed CMOS sensor and image processor for higher image quality and faster continuous shooting speeds

- Canon's in-development proprietary CMOS sensor and image processor will realize higher sensitivity for stills shooting compared with predecessor models. Saving of still-image 10-bit HEIF files will be supported. In addition, the camera will support internal recording of 4K / 60p / YCbCr 4:2:2 / 10-bit / Canon Log and RAW format video.
- AF and AE tracking supported whether shooting with the optical viewfinder (OVF) or live view and improved continuous shooting speeds compared with previous models. With AF and AE tracking, the camera realizes up to approximately 16 frames-per-second shooting using the OVF and 20 with live view. What's more, when shooting with live view, photographers can choose to shoot using either the mechanical shutter or electronic shutter.
- 5x increase in maximum number of images captured when performing continuous RAW shooting compared with predecessor models.

2. More precise autofocus thanks to newly developed AF sensor and AF algorithm

- A new AF sensor will be employed, which increased the number of effective pixels in the center pixel area by approximately 28x compared with predecessor models. High-resolution signals obtained by the AF sensor will enable high focus accuracy when shooting through the OVF. In addition, an expanded AF brightness range will be available for both OVF and live view shooting.
- When using either the OVF or live view, the new AF algorithm, which features more stable performance, will utilize deep learning technology to further improve it tracking capabilities.
- In live view, the AF offers an expanded focus area of approximately 100% (vertical) and approximately 90% (horizontal). In addition, up to 525 measurement points can be used for AF when using automatic selection.

3. Serving professional needs with enhanced data transmission functionality

- The currently in-development Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E9 (regulatory approval pending), when used with the EOS-1D X Mark III, realizes more than twice the wireless image data transmission speed2 as its predecessor model, the WFT-E8 (released in April 2016). What's more, the WFT-E9 can also be used with the EOS C500 Mark II cinema camera (to be released in late December 2019).
- Serves as a connection to smartphones and other mobile devices via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® . Also enables recording of GPS information at the location of image capture.
- When using a wired LAN connection, the WFT-E9 achieves more than twice the image data transmission speed of its predecessor model.
- Improved UI for establishing network connections.
- Expanded link functionality with various equipment. Compatible with the in-development Remote Control Pan-Tilt System which enables remote camera operation.

4. Trusted by professional photographers on the front lines

- Strong magnesium-alloy body provides high reliability.
- Rear-side buttons important for operation are back-lit to enable menu operation in dark conditions.
- The camera's memory card format has been changed from CFast 2.0 to CFexpress, enabling faster data writing. In addition, the camera will include two memory card slots.
- AF Start button features a new internal device that enables fast AF tracking setting without users having to release their finger.
- Battery Pack LP-E19 and a newly designed power management system provide a greater number of shots per charge compared with predecessor models.

www.canon-europe.com/lenses/rf-70-200mm-f2-8l-is-usm-lens/specificatio

www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-90d/canon-90dTHMB.HTM

"2018: CHANGES IN CANON'S MTF EVALUATION METHODS, AND MTF CHARTS

In late 2018, coinciding with the introduction of Canon's RF lens series for full-frame EOS R-series mirrorless cameras, Canon optical engineers made across-the-board changes to the way they evaluate lens optical performance, and how it's displayed in MTF charts.

Fortunately, for consistency, Canon has updated the MTF charts for all current EF, EF-S, TS-E, MP-E, and EF-M lenses, so that meaningful comparisons can still be made by critical Canon users. Canon RF lenses, of course, are also graded on these updated MTF evaluation methods.

- Previous Canon MTF evaluation standards were calculated from criteria derived years ago from the film (analog) era, and not changed until late 2018
- Optical performance is now measured using more critical, demanding standards, based on digital imaging and the use of high-resolution digital image sensors in digital SLRs and mirrorless cameras
- Canon MTF charts will now only display MTF results at the lens' widest maximum aperture — previous Canon MTF charts displayed results at both maximum aperture, and at an effective f/8

Because the new, updated MTF measurement system used by Canon is based on stricter, digitally-oriented criteria, if you compare older and new MTF charts, any previously-introduced lens may seem as though some aspects of its MTF results are now lower than before. Rest assured this is because it's now being graded using more demanding criteria, and does not represent an actual reduction in a given lens' actual ability to deliver contrast or resolution than it previously did."

www.canon-europe.com/pro/stories/rf-85mm-f1-2l-usm-developers-intervie

Why did you choose an f/1.2 aperture rather than f/1.4?

Satoshi: "Although one may think there isn't much difference between f/1.2 and f/1.4 when just looking at the numbers, there is nearly a half stop of difference in brightness. Nearly 1.4 times more light is taken in, resulting in a whole new level in terms of design difficulty. A half stop difference may not seem like much, but when designing large aperture lenses such as f/1.2 and f/1.4, this half stop makes a huge difference in terms of difficulty of design."

Kaishi: "The combination of stunning sharpness in the focused areas and the extremely shallow depth of field of f/1.2 delivers unmatched images. Portraits that use the shallow depth of field of f/1.2 have a unique beauty. The widest aperture setting on the RF 85mm F1.2L USM delivers a beautiful bokeh quality not found on other lenses, and amazing resolution, embodying a new type of imaging expression in portrait photography. That is why f/1.2 was chosen."

How is the bokeh different from that of its EF-mount cousin?

Kaishi: "In terms of bokeh, a key point is that the minimum focusing distance is closer than that of the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM. The strong bokeh created by f/1.2 can be used to create new types of imaging expressions such as close-ups of areas decorated with jewels."

Satoshi: "We try to ensure the bokeh shape stays round at the edge of the frame, and at such a large aperture the lens size needs to be considerably larger. I believe to a certain extent that users can see the improvements to the bokeh shape being cut out in the peripherals [compared to the shape on a DSLR] . That's because there is no mirror box on the Canon EOS R to block the light rays, which is one of the causes of this phenomenon."

Can the bokeh get any creamier?

Tomohiko: "The strong bokeh produced by the large aperture of the Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM is one feature of the lens. However, lenses with significant chromatic aberration suppression tend to have slightly clearer bokeh contours.

"Some users aren't fond of this clarity in the bokeh, for example when the leaves of a tree overlap in the defocused area. In this regard, we wanted to create a unique lens that delivers smoother bokeh quality, motivating us to start the development of the RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS with Defocus Smoothing (DS) coating. Although its specifications are basically the same as the Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM, the DS coating will let users enjoy a softer bokeh quality."

How have you included a wide maximum aperture of f/1.2 while keeping colour fringing at bay?

Kaishi: "I sometimes shoot weddings, and I have always felt that colour fringing on white clothing does not represent what people really want in a portrait on such a special day. So with this in mind, we decided to utilise the greater freedom in design made possible by the RF mount."

Ishibashi: The most significant part in reducing chromatic aberration for the Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM is the BR optical element. This is the second lens to use a BR optical element after the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM. Canon possesses various optical materials such as fluorite, DO lenses and UD lenses, which correct various types of chromatic aberration, and we select which material is best depending on the optical system of each lens. The BR optical element has extraordinary dispersion properties compared to conventional optical materials, offering sufficient chromatic aberration effects, making it possible to achieve our goal of amazingly high performance. If we didn't have the BR optical element, we would have needed to increase the number of lens elements in the design, making the lens far too large.

Satoshi: "[Also] on this lens, in addition to the usual multilayer coating, Air Sphere Coating (ASC) is used to suppress ghosting and flare."

Is the autofocus up to the L-series lens standard?

Masami: "The Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM lens uses the same ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) as on the super telephoto lenses, which has the most powerful torque of any Canon lens, making focusing extremely fast despite the large optics."

Yasushi: "Although the AF drive speed from close-up to infinity is approximately the same as on conventional models, including a focusing range distance selector switch reduces the focusing time during normal shooting, such as portraiture, for more comfortable usage."

Why is the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM longer than its EF mount counterpart?

Satoshi: "In terms of optical design, the total length is measured from the focal plane (the position of the imaging sensor or film). If you compare the EF and RF mounts, the lens mount is closer to the sensor on the RF mount than is the case with the EF mount. Because of this the EF version of some lenses can be shorter as the extra distance is taken up by the longer distance between the lens mount and the sensor in a DSLR camera. This naturally makes the RF version longer in total length to compensate for the difference in sensor-to-mount distance. An easier way to see this is comparing the size of the Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM by itself and the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM with the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R attached. The difference is now smaller, and this is the difference you see when you mount the two lenses on the same Canon EOS R camera."

What other custom features are on this lens?

Yasushi: "We added a control ring, which is unique to RF lenses. Just as on the other RF lenses, aperture, shutter speed and other functions can be assigned to the control ring. The control ring was positioned towards the front as on previous RF lenses in consideration of balance during handheld shooting, and considering ease of operation."

How should photographers use this lens to speed up their workflow?

Kaishi: "We recommend that users try assigning exposure compensation to the control ring during portrait shooting. For example, when shooting portraits outdoors and the lighting conditions suddenly change, you can use your left hand to operate the control ring and adjust exposure compensation while simultaneously concentrating on using the shutter button with your right hand."

How durable is the RF 85mm F1.2L USM?

Kaishi: "What we were unwilling to compromise on was the pro specifications of toughness and durability that an L-series lens should have. We want professionals and enthusiasts to be able to hold on to this lens and use it for a long time without worry. The very front and rear of the lens surfaces are coated with fluorine, making maintenance easier than on the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM. Oil and moisture are repelled, and oil can be easily wiped off with a dry cloth without using solvents."

How sharp is the lens, really?

Kaishi: "When we were developing this lens, many performance tests were carried out repeatedly on a prototype. When shooting at the widest aperture setting using Eye Detection AF in portrait photography, our test photographers spontaneously let out cries of excitement when they saw how sharp the photos were.

"The Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM thoroughly suppresses chromatic aberration and delivers photos with high resolution and high contrast in focused areas. We believe the particular appeal of this lens is in its widest aperture setting. We hope that users who have always stopped down a bit during shooting will enjoy the photos that can now be captured when shooting at f/1.2."
