The island of Bergeggi is a small cone of limestone some 53 metres high which rises 250 metres off the coast, directly opposite the municipality of the same name in the province of Savona.
The island appears to have once been connected to the coast by a thin strip of rock, now worn away by the waves. Today, it is covered with Mediterranean vegetation including interesting tree species such as Campanula sabatia and euforbia arborea. The island is also famous for its numerous palaeoethnological and paleontological finds.
It is a national park and houses important historical and archaeological testimonies such as Roman and medieval remains and monastic buildings.
The coast opposite the island is a series of inlets and cliffs where the sea has eroded caves of great naturalistic and archaeological interest, such as the grotta delle Sirene, the grotta della Galleria del treno and, most famous of all, the grotta Marina, a genuine "book inscribed in the rock", testifying to the rise and fall of the sea level during the Quaternary period.
