after about five days of constant testing and my index finger has just about got used to the lighter-touch of the shutter button. Its protected enough not to accidentally operate. With either shutter the camera feels silky smooth and i also feel much more confident at the slower shutter speeds. I am moving over to eShutter as much as i can, which also gave me a good use for the new Function lever, which i am using to switch between shutter types.

Some of my initial impressions;

I'm not yet sure if its the great handling and/or improvements in the stabilisation, but my initial testing has blown me away at the slow shutter speeds i can now go-to handheld. Another aspect which i wanted, HDR Mode seems to work great handheld (noticeably better than with my GX8) so i cannot wait to try that outdoors.

On tripod, High Res is easy to use and impressive, i will definately be experimenting with that for lanscapes.

Old habits
still have my thumb reaching for the Cursor buttons rather than the excellent Joystick but i will get used to this very soon, especially if i avoid using the other Lumix models for-now. Focussing is so much easier with the stick.

All buttons are clear and positive in use. Same old habits have me forgetting that the Play button is now on the left. With two cards inserted, i have noticed a very small delay (compared to other Lumix models) from when pressing Play to seeing the image in the rear screen. However, i am still using UHS1 cards so i am wondering whether that will change when i get a pair of UHS2.

More old habits have me forgetting about the top LCD, i never seem to look for it but when i do its layout is not intuitive (yet) and the backlight needs to be able to stay on for longer. That said, i do have poor eyesight so my jury is still out on that one?

I am impressed at the near-instantaneous power-up, ready to shoot in no-time.

Assigning EC to one of the dials also makes the process slicker.

Instantaneous focus, more customisable ...best i have experienced from Panasonic.

Main control layouts are excellent / ideally-located for index finger & thumb, i don't have to take eye away from the excellent EVF at-all. I cannot fault the EVF, the tiniest bit of pincushion is only noticeable if one goes looking for it, but so-what. I have no problems using the terrific EVF with or without spectacles.

With more features, comes more menus! So the customisable 'My Menu Settings' is a very welcome addition.

CAMSET settings saves to card 1. As i tend to re-format before any major shoot, i wish one could also have saved the file to any form of 'camera memory' but its not a problem, i have copied the file to my computer.

USB3 is super fast, i envisage using the cable more than my old habit of removing the card. Same with the Panasonic Image App, it works well with either a direct WiFi connection or via a home router.

Full-sized HDMI is an improvement, no-more losing the display when the cable was accidentally knocked on the micro models.

At last, the Remote port is well away (on the other side of the camera) from fouling the movement of the articulating screen, so my tripod work will be better. My existing wired & wireless remotes work well.

My existing Nissin & Godox flashes work ok. Although i primarily use X1To radio, i also can use a Godox as master and the Nissin as an optical slave. I'm still experimenting with the various combinations but all is good so-far.

Video, high-speed burst-modes and the time-lapse features are all very impressive, i have no real use for them just now, so i will experiment with those in my leisure time.

No software/manuals disk included in the box, all easily downloaded from the Panasonic website.

The additional battery charging options are more flexible because of the two cables included;

1. The USB cable; Charge the battery in-camera from any powered USB port.

2. The charging cable; Charge the battery in the external caddy using either the mains power adapter or plug the cable into any powered USB port (computer, car, battery-bank, TV etc).

Its been an easy transition for me because i am well used to handling most of the Panasonic range and i know the menu structure. So today i am switching-over from the GX8 and will now use the G9 on my first proper shoot.

From my initial impressions, i cannot fault this camera and its obvious that Panasonic have put a lot of thought into every aspect.

Sempre da dpreview altri interessanti punti di vista

1. There is some pincushion regardless of the EVF size, but it is minor and I don't see it in any way outweighing the quality of the EVF. I have recently been using an A7r3 and the quality of this EVF is (to me) subjectively better; colour, contrast and sharpness particularly (also, on the A7riii when acquiring focus the EVF noticeably went lower quality - this has not been reported, but it was obvious and annoying when I used it, and it did so way, more than the G9). The A7riii did not have the pincushion, and that was subtly noticeable as better in comparison, (because I am looking and because people have mentioned it) but I would rather have the overall EVF and the pincushion of the G9, than the A7r3 EVF.

2. The eyecup optics do cause some blurring at the extreme corners if you eye is not as close to the EVF as possible, but it is in your peripheral vision and I don't notice it - for me it blurs with my natural limits of my vision as I get anyway. To say it is blurred in the corners is a bit like saying "if I concentrate I can see my nose and the sides of my eye socket in my vision". You just don't think about it.

3. To labour the point of '2' it is not caused by the EVF but my the optics in front if it - you can tell because if you move the EVF to have more of the corner in your vision you see more of the distortion. Going to the smallest EVF size removes all the distortion (with me), the middle has a tiny bit less. But at the full size, the EVF is so huge it is less like looking through an EVF more looking through your own eyes with less peripheral vision (or a black perepheral vision).

4. The amount of distortion depends on how closely you put your eye to the EVF. If I really squeeze my eye to the EVF I cannot see any distortion, even when moving the EVF (unless I make the corner take up half of the view, which is silly).

5. Dunno if it is a plastic optic or not, but I think - though don't know - that if this could have been 'solved' with better optics they would have been very advanced. But, dunno if it could have been, in a cost effective way and I do not think there is anything to solve.

In summary, if this puts your off the EVF and you think the Em-1 ii EVF is a better bet, you are bonkers (I have owned the EM 1 ii and the G9 EVF is a generational leap).

Is it perfect? No. But in my view it is sigificantly better than the EM 1 ii EVF and marginally better - to a useful degree - than the A7r3 EVF. If you hate any pincushion or distortion at extreme edges you might be a bit disappointed, but my instinctive response to the EVF was "wow this is like IMAX, compared to a normal cinema".

p.s. I'll add it to the initial impression thread, but the G9 is superblywell built; like an Em1 ii without the slightly wobbly door, and the best Panasonic buttons ever

E

I have mine for three weeks now. I don't see the issue about smearing. Actually it's one of the sharpest EVF's I have seen so far (I've seen a few and was an EVF hater). Other reviews also mention this sharpness. It's so sharp that you can actually see lens flaws easily.

With the 12-60 you tried you can actually see in the EVF how much less sharp this lens is in the extreme corners at open aperture. So don't blame the EVF too fast.

The slight pincushion distortion is there, but it's personal I guess whether or not it bothers you. I don't mind when I'm looking at the actual image, which looks fantastic.

And finally it is good to realize that all view finders (OVF and EVF) are designed to produce an optimal image only from the ideal viewing position. That's dead center and eye close to the rear lens. When wearing glasses the image already deteriorates and when moving your head/eyes relative to the viewfinder all kinds of aberrations can become visible.

If I look for instance through the OVF of my FF DSLR and move my head I introduce vigneting, darkening and chromatic aberration at the edges of the screen. So I guess viewfinders have their limitations.
