Hey Folks,

Does anyone use a remote flash for nature photography very often?

I use the flash quite a bit for my adventure photography, and when indoors, but I'm wondering how common it is with natural subjects, such as beetles, spiders, deer, etc?

I'm also curious what setup you use to achieve the remote trigger, such as pocket wizard?

Cheers,
Dorian

Dorian,

I use remote flash for my night time badger photography. I'm using Canon 580ex 2 and 430ex 2 and trigger them using Phottix Odin Triggers. I find them excellent, reliable and cheaper than PW. Can use ETTL 2 or Manual. They need a half press of the shutter button to transfer info between trigger and flash so no good for an IR beam Photo Trap.

Thanks Padraig, do you also use things like soft boxes and light stands? I know that once you start thinking about lighting, the amount of equipment you want to carry with you increases exponentially. I imagine it's hard to keep that in a relatively compact package.

I use a580, 430 and a 420 EX remotely, either using the 7D popup flash or a long cable connected to the 580 (otherwise it goes to sleep after 30 minutes). I use mostly for small mammals or night time shooting. 580 and 430 would be a left and right hand flash and the 420 used to illuminate the background (as using flash blackens the BG).

natureimmortal.blogspot.de/2012/05/few-more-before-girls-come-back.htm The mice shots are all remote flash. Not as impressive as badgers though ;)

Here I used the 580 and 430 with the 7D to gt light under the dead tree. natureimmortal.blogspot.de/2011/12/winter-cometh.html

I use a stofen diffuser sometimes to soften the light and home made light stands. Basically a cheap mini tripod taped to a half inch wooden dowling rod. Some times I use a spare tripod.

Neil- love the mice shots.

Cheers man. While I was in the UK I got some fishing bank sticks, extendable. I also bought a couple of fishing stick/tripod or flash screw thread converters. great for staking the flashes out and getting them high.
