Pros: Power speed, many customizable keys, ergonomic, many mpx, does not heat, silent shooting and 120hz viewfinder

Cons: Battery life, screen not fully adjustable, menu with too many items

Opinion: I come from an a99ii, I'm impressed by the incredible work done by Sony, a sensor with 61mpx, I shot in the room with only one light on making a decent photo at 12'800 iso, the a99ii would not have been able to do so well even at 3200iso ... very quiet mechanical shutter also I have the possibility to shoot with electronic shutter and not make any noise. Speed of focus and camera ignition amazing, focus not always precise with 'monocolor' and small subjects, always comparing everything to my a99ii that in this managed nettamemte better! Fantastic the 120hz viewfinder that does not interrupt the vision during the shots even if it is not fluid .. I find it really obscene instead that after years and years and numerous models, the screen does not orient or close as for the alpha 77 and 99 versions ... here we just went back..

Pros: Easy handling, ergonomics

Cons: Weight of the files and a few other trifles

Opinion: I come from Nikon, I photographed with D500, D800, D4 and Df, passed more to Fujifim to land at Sony. As already mentioned several times, the transition was tiring and several times I doubted the choice. Now I got used to it and I must say that the modification of the buttons has made the use more pleasant. The weight of the files is felt but for now I have enough space. I shoot a lot at night and I find the help to the manual focus mesa very useful. I also find the viewfinder excellent and being able to view photos without having to use the display (which I use very little). If I could change one thing, I would put the lens release button on the other side (as on Nikon to be clear) for a pure matter of habit to change lenses. I often use 7artisans lenses and I feel good. RAW files are great and, it seems to me, compared to Nikon recovers highlights better. In the night photo the ISO seal could be better but for that type of photo I use the A9 and the problem does not arise. Sorry if I said some castroneria but I wanted to give my contribution as an amateur to your review site since I took advantage of it a lot. Greetings to all Roberto

Pros: Ergonomics, tuning, resolution, perceived quality, focus

Cons: File weight

Opinion: The A7R IV is an excellent camera, the result of sony's maturation path. The ergonomics are superior compared to previous models, the buttons are more protruding, more contrasted, more pleasant to use. Display and viewfinder are great, the shutter is great. The battery lasts less than on the A7 III. Such a high resolution is a godsend in the crops pushed but if I have to shoot a lot I use the A7 III to save space in the hard disk and in the cloud.

Pros: All

Cons: Nobody

Opinion: I come from Canon exactly from the EOS r5 and for now I can only say that I made the right choice. Obviously I took the g master lenses, so the quality is so much stuff, I only wait for the 85 f1.4 sigma that they say is stratospheric!! Cmq dynamic range scary af lightning fast and RAW files that you can do whatever you want!!! I was expecting something serious but, not so performing!!!

Pros: solid well built , sharpness at the top, scary dynamic range(in a good way).

Cons: Inaccurate bubble / level ( I often have to correct me PP even if from the display I know on the green). histogram in preview of the shot not always accurate and snap made does not always coincide.

Opinion: I switched to Sony (from Nikon d810) mainly for reasons of weight and range optics with more choice than the Nikon ML. it wasn't love at first glance.... indeed! but over time I learned to appreciate it a lot. for those who make landscape the sharpness of this camera is exceptional, the same goes for the dynamic range. but for the price it has the Cons listed above should not be there. with the menu I still quarrel but I made a reason for it.

Pros: Ergonomics, Sensor, Battery, File Workability, AF and more

Cons: Brain menu, a little too noisy from 1600 iso onwards, unlit keys

Opinion: It was my first mirrorless. From the fantastic Nikon D850 (still today I think it is fantastic) to the Sony A7R IV it was not a painless passage, but over time I was able to appreciate it so much. I don't shoot at high ISOs and maybe what I miss most is the ability to go under 100, but even so it's a must for those who do landscaping. Let us be clear, it is very valid in all fields, but that is its nature. Light to carry with, especially with the lenses I have in place at the moment, everything is very balanced. The AF is amazing, as is the mirimo where I thought you had the most problems passing from that of the D850, instead I immediately got used to it and appreciated being able to directly review the shot and the details in the crosshairs. I have a very powerful computer and I have no problem managing raw files, where even with photos that I would normally have binned, I can pull out fantastic images. The silence of the shot, the burst, the quality of the body, the double memory card make it an almost perfect machine, too bad for the menu and little else. Maybe a little off-topic, but if 2 years ago there was the Nikon Z7 II, maybe I would have stayed in the Nikon house, but just for an affective speech and because I had never used a Sony. What can I say, maybe better that way.

Pros: The pros for me are a lot of crisp fast cars made me want to take pictures again

Cons: Having so many pixels from 2000 iso up it has a lot of grain and the colors are not that of the r3 as a less full-bodied hair jpg rows to my taste leave something to be desired

Opinion: Love at first glance the use for naturalistic with the incredible 200,600 machine with the crop factor with the zoom sony reaches 900 with 25 mpx of file, obviously some disinfectant has it but just know how to understand it, af is deadly but remains a less precise hair compared to r3 or A9II, I thank Mattia who insisted on having it try now I can not think of a naturalistic kit without her , an incredible quality counting that I use it with a lens that is not the top of the sony range but still it is a pair that I find better than 850 and 500 Nikon vr f4, for me at the moment there is nothing better in that price range

Pros: Mind-blowing files for sharpness and workability, 61 megapixel resolution, ergonomics, battery life, viewfinder, AF... SONY,Top Sensor

Cons: Some hotspots on long exposures but nothing critical,It doesn't have HDR function in the room and it's a shame.

Opinion: I come from a D850 and at first I was not very happy but on the first exit it was amazing, always perfectly in focus, very sharp files even with non-top, silent, precise, light targetss. It is a little unbalanced since it weighs more on the objectives of the chamber but nothing worrying. I don't make videos but if I did it would be really perfect,on the nikon you could hear the noise of the focus, here it is non-existent and always in focus. I definitely recommend it!

Pros: Amazing files for sharpness and workability, ergonomics, viewfinder, AF... Sony.

Cons: Cost; not immediate and simple to handle all those megapixels, high ISO noise (although you could imagine).

Opinion: Unlike the 7III, with which it was love at first sight, with this machine I had some initial difficulties in the general management of the shots: the 61mpx are really many and they all feel, both in the heaviness of the single photo, and in RAW, uncompressed is on 120 Mb, and in the final quality of the same: exceptional! After the first concerns, however, you can not but appreciate the improvements that Sony has made to ergonomics, keys, viewfinder (I always keep as a reference model my a7III) ... It's a professional-level machine and you can see it. He certainly gives his best in landscape photos, in portraits, where 61mpx amaze me every time for the incredible details they can grasp. Less "brilliant" (and less recommended) for events where an avalanche of GB is triggered - managing them in Post is not immediate - although then, every time you look at the final result, you make a reason for it and it was worth it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone to do anything, because it's not a "all do" as an A7III could be, in fact. But if you need a big megapixel then it's definitely worth considering, cost permitting (which I honestly find a bit high).

Pros: Resolution, weight, battery life, robustness, viewfinder T*

Cons: hotpixels to reset every now and then

Opinion: After the A6000 I switched to the A7R2 which I held for about 3 years and I have to recognize an exceptional machine ! then I had the opportunity to sell the R2 and I took the R4 on the fly which allowed me to get rid of even the small A6000 having a stabilized APS-C mode decidedly better, I must say that the machine is exceptional yes but sometimes I find it difficult to understand why to iso not exaggerated the photos turn out to be a little too dirty ... maybe as a neophyte I miss something but I talk about iso 4000 max 6400 which obviously are very high to demand perfectly clean and sharp photos ok but the machine holds them very well in many situations while in certain light conditions in my opinion it suffers a little ... cmq seen the sensor is there.. I noticed an annoying defect that resolves with the reset of the automatic function sensor but that I have to force to make disappear sometimes the white dots that happen in the image ... in silent mode shots without even wearing out the shutter... practically infinite life of the machine body!! crops can be exaggerated and sometimes embarrassing so much you can cut and "approach" subjects in post.. I find in this machine a great satisfaction I did few astrophoto tests and I must say that maybe it is not the right machine for the purpose ... the photos are filled with colored dots...

Pros: Top sensor, autofocus performance, grip, consumption, viewfinder

Cons: Price, still some lack firmware side

Opinion: The machine, after the excellent RIII represents, personal opinion, the best of Sony. It doesn't have the fast performance of the A9, but it packs a whole host of great features that make it a good car for every occasion. The viewfinder is indistinguishable from an optical viewfinder, if we really want to look for the hair in the egg, it is a little small. The AF performance is finally very satisfactory, great tracking, excellent overall responsiveness. The machine falls very well in the hand and the handle is very precise for a medium-sized hand. Excellent sensor even at medium ISO high, in my opinion at high ISO the RIII is better, but we are talking about trifles. Fantastic dynamic range, raw very workable especially with Capture One which I consider superior to Lightroom for Sony raws. As always, purely electronic features are granted with the eyedropper. What it costs to put a focus stacking, a better timelapse, pixel shift in the room and other small things that other brands even have on much lower class machines... Quite a high price, in line with other products of the brand. Ultimately a great and complete machine in all respects. Its battery grip is also excellent.

Pros: Immense dynamic range, excellent grip, battery life, beautiful viewfinder, brightness under the sun of the scary autofocus chase display, customization

Cons: Non-backlit keys, left shoulder unused, often absurd and cumbersome menu, lack of a timer when laying B

Opinion: I've been using it since January, it amazes me more and more, I do landscape and birdlife, two opposite genres, yet it never breaks down. High ISO generates noise, but I expected it from such a tool, so I do not consider it a defect. The autofocus follows me the birds in flight which is a wonder, in this kind what this machine allows me is amazing, I come from years of fuji, of which I was satisfied, but here we are on another planet. As a landscaper I miss the timer during the pose b, on fuji there was, and this I regret, it was convenient a lot, other lack is the backlight of the keys, a smallness that like the timer would be convenient. The battery finally lasts a long time, I made startrails from almost 500 shots and I still had, with fuji I needed 3. In a rather tortuous photo market I think at the moment this is the allround par excellence, a bit like it was in its time for the still magnificent d850 If you have a powerful PC do not hesitate P. S. The menus are brainy, but it makes up for it with nice customization

Pros: 61 mpixel, weight.

Cons: little things.

Opinion: After canon and nikon I wanted to try this new adventure with sony, more out of curiosity than necessity, coming from d850 I wanted to stay in a type of machine "all-rounder" and I am satisfied. I laugh at the little ones that have already been mentioned by those who preceded me in the reviews i.e. the noise to iso not very high but with 61mp. it was almost obvious, the menu a bit complicated, etc... The same applies to the pros i.e. the 61mpixels, autofocus, etc... good light at all!

Pros: Weight and size, sensor, autofocus, quick buffer, extraordinary versatility, excellent key configurability.

Cons: Signal-to-noise ratio lower than I expected.

Opinion: I decided to write two lines after the first month of use focusing only on some aspects that impressed me. I agree with what Nangi said about the noise signal ratio, although we talk about hair in the egg given the density of pixels you have to know how to master these raw because even at low iso there is more noise than I thought in the shadows. Of course a photograph properly exposed in optimal light gives mostly amazing results but otherwise you always have to work a little with noise reduction (one of the reasons for buying can be just the critical shots). The autofocus for me coming from the D800e is excellent, a huge step forward, considering that then it is a sensor with such high resolution that it shoots 10 fps. almost an epochal leap from 2012! The viewfinder is great, especially for the functions to help the manual focus, it was the needle of the scale for me to decide the purchase since my kit is mainly MF. I didn't think a mirrorless could have such a good viewfinder, with a couple of considerations to add. The first is that the perfect fire percentage remains not very high on moving subjects even slow (for example in the portrait of my little ones) and if I want the result I have to resort as with the reflex to the "human bracketing of MAF", that is to oscillate during short Gusts. The second is that I did sessions with d800e shooting a little with one and a bit with the other and the brightness of the reflex crosshairs still gives me a better feed-back, albeit not much. The last observation is that being used to larger reflexes requires a bit of adaptation. In short, a great machine, very versatile, a new era in photography in many respects especially dynamic. However, the 2012 D800e sensor is still very close!

Pros: Ergonomics, weight, fantastic sensor, customization, point view resolution, colors

Cons: As always the menu, small viewfinder to my taste

Opinion: My first Sony was the a7R3, I have to say a great car, but coming from Nikon I saw shortcomings and inconveniences, on this a7R4, many of those gaps were solved, one of all, the arrangement of the rear ring, now more protruding, often when I had the eye glued to the viewfinder I confused that ring with that of the exposure compensation of exposure , in addition to that ring, a button has now been added to block it, because often involuntarily you went to move it changing the exposure. I like the colors a lot, I find them brighter than the Nikon I was used to. I also improved the monitor resolution and the viewfinder a lot, although I still find them small, especially the crosshairs, to my taste I would like bigger, because I often like to look at the photos taken in the crosshairs. The sensor instead nothing to say, my main use is in the landscape, and the resolution you see all! The autofocus combined with the Eye Af are very fast, much more than other brands, in the landscape however, I happened that when I shoot with tripods and at dusk the machine struggles to focus with single point, instead with all the points of focus is very fast! The menu a mess as always, the translation was made by a drunk Polish bear. Once set, however, with all its custom keys you hardly re-enter (and fortunately). That said, the machine for me is gorgeous, and my parer the best mirrorless on the market and gives me a lot of satisfaction!

Pros: Excellent sensor, autofocus speed, tracking and/or eye-detection, general keys and ergonomics, 26MPX crop, tropicalization, very high resolution combination with continuous 10fps shooting frequency. The sensor was developed directly by Sony, as part of a previous project to reduce the waste of light that reaches photodiodes especially at the edges and substantially improve performance compared to the classic CMOS sensor. Finally I add INVARIANCE ISO clean in my opinion of full almost 4 stops (really has an ISO sensor invariant)

Cons: Signal/noise ratio, menu and subdivision of the same (numerousness and complexity), without unbalanced battery pack with G Master optics.

Opinion: After about 2 months of use, without any presumption of getting to write a complete and in-depth review, I can bring my contribution with some "feeling" from the field: a) really remarkable balance between image quality and versatility resulting from the combination of very high resolution and continuous shooting frequency of 10 fps; The buffer keeps pace for about 7-8 seconds..., but can triple its capacity if you shoot in APS-C mode (with crop factor of 1.5x). b) Sony has stated a refinement of internal 5-axis stabilization that should lead to a clearing capacity of up to 5.5 stop, but in my practice in the face of theoretically safe times the rate of successful home-taken shots was modest. c) the electronic viewfinder reaches 5.76 million points, but the image it returns has an overly artificial and "engraved" appearance obviously of "oversharpening". d) I recommend also taking the battery pack because without already with G master optics type 24-70 f/2.8 is a bit unbalanced forward (imagine with the long...) and) the dynamic range is spectacular (the color yield is great with really natural looking JPEG). When I write "spectacular" I mean full recovery of the underexposed photos of almost 4 stops and overexposed photos of a plentiful stop and a half; f) the Eye Af is "excellent": on some occasions "extreme" with even small subjects lost fire. g) the 3" rear screen is a little small for a camera of this level (considered all the more so that I do not use the camera for videos...) customization of the camera keys in my opinion necessary to work around a menu consisting of 6 tabs and about forty different sub-screens. i) signal-to-noise ratio: if you do not master the noise reduction process well in post-production, the file can be "strongly" demotivating (it obviously depends on the light conditions in which you shoot). Lastly the battery life has improved, with about 530 shots of autonomy when using the viewfinder and a little more when you go instead to use the LCD screen: these are CIPA figures, very conservative... on the field significantly less.

Pros: Sensor quality, good ergonomics, autofocus speed, image management software, tracking and/or eye-detection excel compared to the competition

Cons: Menu organization still very insufficient, noise even at medium high ISO, however understandable in such a sensor. Modest electronic viewfinder quality despite increased resolution, just enough for the 3-inch display

Opinion: The A7RIV has only small real improvements compared to the previous model., except of course the sensor. The italian translation of the menus and the organization of the menus is unacceptable. Certain terms are ridiculous like "Entry." You need a photographer who translates correctly. The ability to change contrast, brightness and color temperature of both the viewfinder and the monitor is very modest compared to the competition. In addition, the image in the crosshairs is still too artificial. I speak as someone who knows the world Nikon, Canon, Leica, Olympus, Hasselblad perfectly and I say this because I have used other machines for years or used. Finally, the price is exaggerated precisely for the reasons just mentioned. There are also other shortcomings that I prevent from pointing out. Ultimately, however, is it a good machine that is perhaps designed to compete with machines that churn out 100 mpix files and cost 10,000 euros or more? I think that's a pretty poor reason. I recommend taking the Battery Pack as well.

Pros: Almost everything

Cons: Only flaw in my opinion, the CAR ISO setting stops at 100 iso.

Opinion: I won't do a review of the many qualities of this camera, it's already been written a lot and I'm not even qualified to add anything else. However, I want to break a spear in favour of Sony on the much-criticized theme of practicality of use and the intuition of the menus; I come from Nikon D850 and I can affirm the Sony, with simple customizations of some keys, is much more practical and intuitive; you have everything at your fingertips looking continuously in the crosshairs and you set each parameter with speed.

avatarjunior
sent on October 16, 2019

Pros: 61 mpx, improved grip, improved keys and tropicalization, 26mpx crop apsc, autofocus

Cons: unfortunately, there are still many shortcomings...

Opinion: More than a review, for me they are first impressions. The Sony alpha7r4, in addition to the new sensor, has been improved in many ways. If the r3 (which I had) was fine, this is even better... I noticed that the files seem to be more "crunchy" as well as being obviously more defined always than the r3. The machine body is improved in ergonomics and tropicalization, in addition to the keys also the door of memory cards seemed better built. They aim absolutely top as a definition. As for the high iso noise hold in my humble opinion the camera behaves slightly worse, in fact up to 400-800 iso there are no particular problems but turning up to 3200-6400 you will feel a little more noise than the r3... little bad because 95% of the shots I take and that I will do with this body will be low iso because the photocame is optimized to work precisely at low iso. The good thing is that the hot pixels are diminished sign of better heat dissipation, all results in an even cleaner file and therefore with a higher quality. It is obvious that this r4 is not the perfect machine body... there are shortcomings and things that in my opinion Sony has neglected: first of all the touch screen that is still not at the levels of that Canon, keys not backlit, display not completely winding and operational speed especially on the ignition from Improve. For the rest I reserve to write something else trying it in more detail.

avatarsupporter
sent on September 23, 2019

Pros: 61 megapixels, improved keys and dier, removed the problem of hot pixels

Cons: nobody but the high price obviously

Opinion: Finally Sony was able to do even more, taking the previous A7r III, solving the known hot pixel problems, increasing the megapixels succeeding with a new sensor of 61 not to increase the level of digital noise, indeed to lower it and to be able to give a Satisfying dynamic range to the file, you manage to recover at night up to 2-3 stops without problems. The body that already on the r3 was perfect, is improved even more, making more secure and sealed the various buttons and ghieres that to the touch seem softer and more fluid in movements. Autofocus screams as always, with joystick dedicated to moving the maf point, and double SD slot to work safely with 1 backup copy. The digital viewfinder has been increased in definition and level of noise sealing, in the usual situation where r3 does not arrive or comes to us showing a ruined image xche' night, the r4 makes you see them better. In short, they created a monster really this time, machine with incredible performances.
