Rotterdam was historically an important port in the triangular trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Ships left from the Lloyd Quarter with goods like weapons, pottery and spirits, which were traded in West Africa for enslaved people. Those enslaved people were then transported to Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean. The profits from this trade helped build wealth in the city.
