La Rhodometra sacraria è una falena della famiglia delle Geometridae abbastanza comune nel mio terreno. Durante le mie esplorazioni notturne vedo spesso questa specie, è molto paurosa e scappa subito se tento di avvicinarmi. Lo scorso settembre durante delle notti molto umide sono riuscito a fotografarla mentre si nutriva di nettare su un fiore di Euryops pectinatus, questo esemplare non si è spaventato ed ha continuato a nutrirsi anche dopo che mi ero allontanato. Potete osservare la spirotromba infilata nel fiore. Le uova vengono deposte sulle piante nutrici e sono gialle dalla forma allungata. I bruchi sono marroni o verdi, gli esemplari verdi hanno una striscia marrone o rossa lungo tutto il corpo; la testa è molto piccola di colore rosso o marrone. Si nutrono di molte piante erbacee, io li ho sempre osservati su alcune specie di Asteraceae. Sono molto difficili da trovare perché trascorrono la loro vita nascosti tra le foglie e i rametti delle piante nutrici, da adulti raggiungono una lunghezza di circa 30 mm. Come tutti i Geometridae, anche questa specie si muove in un modo molto particolare perché non ha le pseudozampe che gli consentono di aggrapparsi bene ai rametti e alle foglie. Le sue zampe sono posizionate alle due estremità del corpo, quindi per poter fare un passo deve prima piegarsi per avvicinare le due estremità, poi con la testa e le zampe anteriori, fa un piccolo salto in avanti per avanzare. Diventato adulto il bruco si allontana dalla pianta nutrice e va alla ricerca di un posto adatto per cominciare la metamorfosi, di solito si posiziona sotto le foglie o nell'erba. La crisalide è lunga circa 1 centimetro con tonalità di giallo e marrone. La falena ha un'elevata variazione di colore causata dalla temperatura dell'ambiente in cui la crisalide effettua la metamorfosi. Gli esemplari che compiono la metamorfosi nei caldi mesi estivi hanno colori più scuri, invece gli esemplari vissuti in autunno e primavera con temperature più basse, hanno colori più chiari. Ho osservato falene con tante tonalità diverse di giallo e marrone. Una particolare caratteristica di questa specie è la presenza di una striscia lungo le ali che ha una colorazione più scura del resto del corpo, ma la sua colorazione cambia sempre a seconda della temperatura. Nelle zampe posteriori potete notare due paia di piccole spine. Le diverse e particolari colorazioni non sono la caratteristica determinante per distinguere la sessualità degli esemplari, è importantissimo osservare le antenne. le femmine hanno le antenne molto sottili, come l'esemplare in foto; i maschi invece le hanno più robuste e sono formate da tanti peli sensori che sono importantissimi per l'accoppiamento. I maschi grazie ai peli sensori riescono a percepire i feromoni sessuali emessi dalle femmine, le quali dopo l'accoppiamento vanno subito alla ricerca delle piante nutrici sulle quali deporre le uova.
