L'ammasso aperto delle Iadi immerso nelle polveri galattiche. E' l'ammasso aperto più vicino a noi, a soli circa 153 anni luce. Le 4 più brillanti costituiscono la testa del Toro, di cui la gigante rossa Aldebaran, che non fa parte dell'ammasso aperto perché più vicina a noi e solo proiettivamente sulla stessa linea, ne rappresenta uno degli occhi (l'altro è rappresentato da Ain o epsilon Tau, una delle Iadi). Secondo la mitologia greca, le Iadi sono figlie di Atlante ed Etra e sorelle delle Pleiadi. Morirono di dolore per la perdita del fratello Iante e Zeus, mosso a compassione per tanto amore fraterno, le pose in cielo.
