l martin pescatore del bosco è presente nell'Africa subsahariana fino al confine settentrionale della Repubblica Sudafricana, ma è stanziale solo nelle zone equatoriali. Suo habitat naturale sono i boschi, specialmente quelli di acacie, anche lontano dall'acqua. Ha dorso, ali e coda di colore blu intenso; le spalle sono nere, le parti inferiori e le guance bianche. Il lungo becco presenta la mascella superiore rossa e quella inferiore nera, ed è congiunto gli occhi da una striscia scura che prosegue verso la nuca. Come i consimili, il martin pescatore del bosco pratica la caccia all'agguato da un posatoio; le sue prede elettive sono i grossi insetti, ma cattura anche ragni, pesci, rane e piccoli serpenti. Nella difesa del proprio territorio mostra una notevole aggressività, arrivando ad attaccare anche l'uomo. Costruisce il nido in cavità scavate negli alberi dai picchi o da altri uccelli, dove la femmina depone 3 uova. La foto è un crop eseguito in post produzione.
