Una macro scattata durante una delle mie quotidiane esplorazioni notturne a luglio dello scorso anno. In quelle notti cadeva tantissima umidità, c'era un leggero vento e le temperature erano più basse nonostante il caldo delle ore diurne, avevo posato gli zaini per terra e dopo un'ora sembravano bagnati. Questo tipo di clima è perfetto per le esplorazioni notturne, l'umidità invoglia gli animali ad uscire dalle tane e sono più facili da osservare. Mentre camminavo ho notato nell'erba questi due piccoli insetti che riposavano su un rametto secco, delicatamente l'ho raccolto e posizionato su un plamp per poterli fotografare. L'insetto più grande è un Distoleon tetragrammicus, fa parte della famiglia Myrmeleontidae. La femmina depone le uova una alla volta nel terreno ed essendo appiccicose si ricoprono subito di terra favorendo la mimetizzazione. La larva è molto piccola, ha un corpo tozzo, quasi ovale completamente ricoperto di peli con tre paia di zampe e delle forti mandibole che sono dotate di file di spine all'interno. Si nutre di formiche e altri piccoli insetti, subito dopo la schiusa inizia a preparare la sua zona di caccia. Scava una buca conica nel terreno a forma di imbuto profonda pochi centimetri e attende la preda nascosta sul fondo lasciando uscire solo la testa e le mascelle. Quando una preda cade nella buca non riesce più ad uscirne a causa dell'inclinazione delle pareti, lo sforzo di risalire in superfice fa crollare verso il fondo i granelli di terra e attira l'attenzione della larva, la quale gli lancia addosso altra terra rendendo ancora più instabile la trappola e facilitandone la caduta verso il basso. Dopo aver catturato la preda con le sue forti mandibole, la trascina sotto terra, dove le inietta del liquido paralizzante digestivo che renderà liquido il suo interno in modo da risucchiarla e lasciare solo la pelle esterna, che viene poi lanciata fuori dal buco per non riempirlo di insetti morti. La crescita della larva avviene 3 fasi, ognuna delle quali finisce con una muta, alla fine della terza fase compie l'ultima muta e si prepara per la metamorfosi. Il tempo necessario alla crescita dipende dalla disponibilità di cibo, può vivere sottoterra da 1 a 3 anni. Quando è cresciuta abbastanza, la larva costruisce un bozzolo sferico composto da granelli di terra sepolto a diversi centimetri di profondità nel terreno. Dopo una metamorfosi di circa un mese, l'adulto fora l'estremità superiore del bozzolo e sale verso la superficie, sono necessari qualche decina di minuti per distendere le ali, poi è pronto a volare e ad iniziare la sua nuova vita. L'adulto vive per circa 3 o 4 settimane, si nutre di polline, nettare e melata, ha abitudini notturne e di giorno preferisce restare nascosto tra i rami o nell'erba. Il secondo insetto è un Synanthedon tipuliformis, un lepidottero della famiglia delle Sesiidae che compie una sola generazione all'anno. La femmina depone circa 10 uova tra i rami giovani delle piante oppure tra le fessure della corteccia, Le larve nascono dopo 2 settimane e trascorrono tutta la loro vita all'interno delle gallerie scavate nei rami delle piante nutrici: il Kaki, la Vite, il Nocciolo e il Lampone. Questa specie è considerata dannosa perché può rallentare la crescita della pianta, a causa delle loro gallerie il legno diventa più fragile e in caso di forte vento i rami possono spezzarsi. Trascorrono l'inverno nelle gallerie e in primavera quando sono abbastanza grandi costruiscono la crisalide vicino alla corteccia. Lo sfarfallamento avviene in estate e in autunno, l'adulto esce attraverso un buco nella corteccia che era stato già preparato dalla larva prima della metamorfosi. Dopo averli osservati e fotografati li ho rimessi dov'erano per non disturbarli, quella notte continuando l'esplorazione ho fotografato anche alcuni gechi, ragni e specie di farfalle. Colgo l'occasione con questa foto per augurarvi un felice anno nuovo.
