La tribù Kanuri è originaria dell'Impero Kanem-Bornu, di cui ora fa parte il Niger, Camerun, Ciad e Nigeria Agli individui che all'epoca viaggiavano al di fuori dell'impero veniva praticata la scarificazione facciale come mezzo di identificazione e “protezione internazionale”. Ciò era dovuto alla natura redditizia della tratta degli schiavi dell'epoca. Esistevano infatti persone che attaccavano le città e rapivano persone per venderle come schiavi. Pertanto, il popolo Kanuri (a quel tempo una potente tribù) usava i segni tribali facciali per avvertire invasori e rapitori che essi provenivano da una tribù potente e che se gli fosse successo qualcosa avrebbero dichiarato guerra (Maiduguri, Nigeria - Aprile 2022)
