Sestiere Dorsoduro, Venezia ... dicembre 2021 ... Il ponte in questione è quello al centro della scena e scavalca il rio di San Barnaba. Per lunghissimo tempo è stato il teatro di un'antica ed insolita tradizione veneziana, da secoli "fortunatamente" abbandonata: la guerra dei pugni. Gli esponenti di due avverse fazioni, i Castellani di San Pietro di Castello ed i Nicolotti di San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, si sfidavano a colpi di pugni sulla sommità di questo e di altri ponti cittadini, all'epoca quasi tutti sprovvisti di ringhiere ai lati, dapprima i campioni in singole tenzoni ed a seguire la folla in paurosa rissa: scopo del "gioco" era ovviamente quello di gettare gli avversari nel rio sottostante mantenendo i propri uomini sul ponte. La rivalità tra le due fazioni ha origini antichissime e si deve forse allo scoppio di contrasti tra la popolazione di Jesolo e quella d'Eraclea. Allorchè le genti che abitavano quelle terre si trasferirono in città, andarono a formare due comunità separate: i Castellani abitarono i sestieri di Castello, di San Marco e di Dorsoduro, mentre i Nicolotti abitarono quelli di San Polo, Santa Croce e Cannaregio. Diversi e contrapposti anche gli usi ed i costumi: i Castellani portavano berretti e sciarpe rossi, i Nicolotti viravano sul nero; le donne dei Castellani portavano i fiori al petto su di un lato, quelle dei Nicolotti sull'altro ...
