Agosto 2012: partiamo alle prime luci sotto una debole nevicata (nei giorni precedenti ne è caduta parecchia) e cominciamo ad inerpicarci verso la nostra meta su per il sentiero appena visibile che si snoda nel bosco di faggi australi che la nostra guida ci spiega essere piuttosto vecchi, nonostante le dimensioni abbastanza contenute, a causa delle condizioni atmosferiche particolarmente dure (freddo e vento patagonico) che ne rallentano la crescita. Non è tanto freddo, siamo poco sopra lo zero, e si cammina abbastanza agevolmente per un po' ma ad un certo punto la neve si fa sempre più alta e dobbiamo mettere le ciaspole. Da lì in poi è tutto un saliscendi tra gli alberi scheletrici e innevati che sembrano spettri nella luce livida, la fatica si fa sentire, soprattutto perchè nonostante le ciaspole si affonda a volte fino al ginocchio e le pendenze sono elevate, e si comincia a sudare sotto le giacche a vento quando verso mezzogiorno finalmente smette di nevicare e si intravvede qualche pallido raggio di sole. Ancora qualche minuto e tra gli alberi e le nuvole basse cominciamo ad scorgere il ghiacciaio ai piedi della montagna e con una certa emozione avanziamo fino a guadagnare la grande distesa libera e innevata ai suoi piedi. Il cielo si fa sempre più limpido e pian piano emerge in tutta la sua imponenza il mitico Fitz Roy, la montagna che fuma, eccome se fuma, dalla cima esce un pennacchio bianco generato dal forte vento in quota che spara la neve del versante opposto al di là della cima. Non c'è anima viva in tutta la montagna a parte noi, ci inebriamo per un po' della sua visione prima di incamminarci alla ricerca del sentiero del ritorno, verso la laguna Capri e poi giù a El Chalten. La neve alta infatti ha coperto tutte le segnalazioni ed anche l'esperta guida ha difficoltà a trovare il sentiero. Dopo qualche peripezia, stremati ma appagati torniamo in albergo.
