Della storia di Castel Thun si sa che venne in possesso di Varimberto di Tono nel 1267. Questo castello era detto Belvesino dal nome della persona che lo possedeva o che lo fece costruire. Dopo la ricostruzione terminata nel 1422 dai Tono, il castello fu quasi completamente distrutto da un incendio nel 1528. Fu ricostruito da Sigismondo detto l'oratore, il più ragguardevole personaggio dei suo casato, amico e consigliere di Massimiliano 1, Carlo V, Ferdinando I e dei grandi vescovi trentini della prima metà dei XVI secolo. Un secondo incendio divampò pochi anni dopo, nel 1569. Altri rimaneggiamenti subì il castello nell'epoca barocca, ad opera soprattutto dei vescovi Thun
