La Porsche 550 Spyder (che poi in realtà è una Barchetta non avendo alcun tipo di protezione dell'abitacolo) fu costruita dal 1953 al 1957 in circa 90 esemplari. Dal 1954 vennero approntate la versione più tranquilla denominata 550 A (70 cavalli di potenza massima) e la versione 550 S un po' più performante nelle prestazioni. Della versione 550 RS... qui visibile in fotografia... furono costruite 15 vetture. Tutte le 550 Spyder erano dotate di un motore boxer di 1498 cm3 con 4 cilindri raffreddati ad aria e con doppio albero a camme in testa posizionato posteriormente. Nella versione RS (Rometsch Spyder) il propulsore erogava quasi 180 cavalli di potenza facendo raggiungere alla vettura i 220 chilometri orari di velocità massima. Per la sua maneggevolezza nelle competizioni la vettura si prese l'appellativo di "Giant Killer" mentre la sua sigla 550 rappresentava il 550° progetto uscito dallo Studio di Ferdinand Porsche. Il 20 settembre 1955... mentre era alla guida della sua 550 Spyder... a seguito di un'incidente stradale perse la vita il famoso attore James Dean. Questa fotografia fu scattata sotto la pioggia.
