Il Corridoio delle Stimmate:
A sinistra della Basilica si trova la Cappella della Pietà, terminata nel 1532. Dello stesso anno probabilmente è anche la tavola invetriata policroma che raffigura la Pietà, eseguita da Santi Buglioni. Attraverso una porta ad arco si accede al Corridoio delle Stimmate, edificato tra il 1578 e il 1582. E' in questo corridoio che si svolge la processione dei frati, che si recano sul luogo dove Francesco ricevette le stigmate. La processione avviene tutti i giorni, a partire dal 1431, e il suo orario attuale è alle ore 15.

La leggenda dice che una notte d'inverno, quando fuori imperversava una tormenta, i frati dovettero rinunciare alla processione. La mattina dopo trovarono impresse nella neve le orme degli animali del bosco, che erano andati in processione al loro posto. Fu così costruito il corridoio per dare riparo ai frati anche negli inverni nevosi.
Il corridoio è affrescato con episodi della vita di San Francesco, in particolare quelli che riguardano la Verna. Gli affreschi originali furono presto rovinati dalle intemperie e furono rifatti in diversi tempi. Oggi ci sono 21 riquadri, 18 realizzati da Baccio Maria Bacci tra il 1929 e 1962, in sostituzione degli affreschi seicenteschi di fra' Emanuele da Como, che erano già stati rinnovati nel 1840 da Luigi e Giovanni Ademollo, la cui opera è ancora visibile negli ultimi tre riquadri. La storia del Santo è preceduta da un affresco che rappresenta il Presepe: fu proprio Francesco nel 1223 il primo a voler rappresentare una scena che mostrasse la natività.
