Basilica maggiore Dalla piazza del Quadrante si accede alla Basilica Maggiore, dedicata alla Madonna Assunta, consacrata nel 1568. La chiesa venne edificata nel 1349 per volere del conte Tarlato di Pietramala e della moglie Giovanna di Santa Fiora, all'epoca proprietari del castello chiusino, ripresa nel 1468 e conclusa nel 1509 con l'aiuto dei consoli fiorentini dell'Arte della Lana. La basilica è preceduta da un portico tardo-rinascimentale - edificato tra il 1536 ed il 1538, ma completamente ricostruito nel secondo dopoguerra - che si prolunga sul fianco destro fino quasi al campanile (1486-1490), sotto il quale è collocato: San Francesco d'Assisi abbraccia Gesù Cristo crocifisso (1888), in bronzo, di Vincenzo Rosignoli: l'opera, ispirata ad un dipinto del pittore spagnolo Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, venne donata al santuario da papa Leone XIII. Nella fotografia si notano ai lati del presbiterio, San Francesco d'Assisi e Sant'Antonio abate (1475 - 1480 ca.), terracotte invetriate di Andrea della Robbia. A sx ed a dx si intravedono le due cappelle con le opere del Della Robbia. Quarta parte del tour fotografico dedicata alla basilica ed ai tesori del Della Robbia, opere in terracotta invetriata che si trovano in grande quantità al Santuario della Verna.
